11/25/24: How the North Country's farms wind down from the harvest

As winter creeps in, the North Country's farms are transitioning from the growing season to the storage season. Kitty O'Neil from the Cornell Cooperative Extension fills us in. Also, the Adirondack Foundation is awarding money to community events this winter. The goals are to benefit communities, fight isolation and promote civic engagement.

When cows burp, they release methane, one of the worst greenhouse gases. Scientists are analyzing cow digestion to see how they could help reduce their contribution to climate change. 11/20/24: A river runs through it

Like in many North Country villages, Saranac Lake's riverfront has gone neglected and underutilized. A group of paddlers is trying to build park with a white water wave along the Saranac River, but they still need to raise a lot of money. Also: U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stopped by SUNY Canton Monday to promote a cyber security program that helps pay for students' tuition but isn't getting enough applicants.

11/19/24: Battling New York's biggest forest fire in years

A drought warning is in place across much of southern New York as the Jennings Creek wildfire has burned thousands of acres and forced people to leave their homes. A conversation with an Adirondack Forest Ranger who's serving as a crew chief to fight the wildfire in Orange County. Also: For the first time, Cape Vincent's only grocery is closing for the winter, leaving a gap for the local food pantry and people in the community who can't drive.

11/14/24: Will Airbnbs return to the long-term rental market?

A new pilot program is exploring a different approach to the region’s housing crisis. Three Adirondack nonprofits have teamed up to help homeowners turn existing short-term rentals, like Airbnb and VRBO, into more traditional long-term rentals. Also: Adirondack green groups react to Lee Zeldin's nomination to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
