18. EPISODE IN ENGLISH: Mapping Yiddish-Ukrainian Literary Cross-Pollination - guest Tetiana Nepypenko.

Żydzi i inni Polacy

Tetiana Nepypenko is a doctoral student at Kyiv Mohyla Academy and was selected by the Lviv Center of Urban History to be a visiting Fellow at the Taube Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Wroclaw from November 2023 to April 2024. During her residency, she focused on Yiddish and Ukrainian literary exchange in the 1920s as it played out in Yiddish- and Ukrainian language periodicals.

In addition, today’s conversation covers various topics from Tania’s recent research including strategies for translating the works of Paul Celan into Ukrainian, changes in Avrom Sutskever’s poetic style over time, and portrayals of Kharkiv in the works of Yiddish and Ukrainian writers.

Apart from her academic research, Nepypenko is also a translator, currently working on a volume of short stories by Edgar Allen Poe. She published a Ukrainian translation of a volume of Yiddish avant-garde poetry in 2022.

Your host today is Rejza Turner, a visiting graduate student at the Taube Department of Jewish Studies. Her academic base in the United States is the History Department at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. You can listen to an interview with her in episode 9 of our English-language podcast.
