    #273 CONCERT REVIEW - KING DIAMOND & OVERKILL

    On Friday, October 25th, 2024, we traveled to The Eastern in Atlanta, Georgia for the Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 Tour to see KING DIAMOND & OVERKILL (LIVE!) in concert, and it was everything we wanted and expected it to be: A perfect venue without a bad spot in the house, incredibly killer bands with album perfect production and sound, and absolutely ZERO traces of “party gravy” to be found anywhere on the premises.   Regrettably, we missed show opener NIGHT DEMON because we had to drive “from South Carolina” through Atlanta traffic to get to the venue and the start time of the show was far earlier than we expected, as opposed to back in the day when it was “doors open at 8, show starts at 2:30 am”.    We have an “UPDATE” from a previous episode regarding “every married man’s fantasy”.     #270 GHOST - INSIDE THE METAL

    “They’re the Toto of metal…” In keeping with the Halloween centric theme of October, obviously we’ve got to talk about “devil music”, and what better band to represent “the devil stuff” than GHOST, who’s not at all bashful about their utilization of Satan for inspiration. Imagine the mysteriousness of Blue Oyster Cult, but “kinda more metal, and sorta satanic a little bit”. While not overtly hateful or evil per se (as far as “devil music” goes), there is certainly a dark, otherworldly, and strangely hypnotic aesthetic to GHOST. With music containing powerful melodies & catchy hooks and lyrics incorporating a liberal infusion of “the devil stuff” (not to mention the eerie imagery, including a satanic pope and several Nameless Ghouls), listeners may experience a “flavor clash” from the resulting sonic incongruity as the music of GHOST is “kinda happyish but their lyrics are the exact opposite.” Before engaging in anything remotely fun (especially if it includes a third wheel), be sure “the math is right” ahead of time and remember that the formula is “half your age plus 7” (either way).     #269 - HALLOWEEN 2024 SUPER SPECIAL

    Upon descending deep down into the dank, cavernous darkness of the Bunkerpoon Dungeon, there’s a mysterious change in atmosphere that instantly transforms the entire month of October into Halloween, with all of the usual suspects present and accounted for: witches and wizards, ghosts and goblins, vampires, werewolves, reapers, reptiles, and even a little bit of good natured “Halloween themed psychic fisting” thrown in for good measure to make everything as authentically creepy as possible.   Halloween season conjures thoughts of misty mornings, the enjoyment of fresh greenery, and visions of vast landscapes filled with leafless, haunted trees towering high above a multicolored blanket of fallen, lifeless leaves.     #268 STONER DOOM METAL VOL. 7: THE SEARCH FOR DOOM

    “It’s all the same…only the names will change…”   Sometimes, just like with “identical” twins, identifying the differences between subgenres can be difficult. Sure, they may seem the same, but there are subtle differences between the two that make them unique as individuals. Similarly, as with the “speed metal vs thrash metal” debate which has persisted since the 80’s, so continues the everlasting debate between Stoner and Doom metal:     Are they the same? Or are they different?  And if they ARE different, then WHAT is the difference?   In short, both Stoner AND Doom metal trace the source of each of its respective origins back to Black Sabbath, with each possessing an arsenal of crushing riffs, tuned down guitars, and slow, heavy, trudging tempos.
