    Learning literature & languages with Emi

    Blind since birth, I was lucky to grow up in a privileged context, which from childhood guaranteed me a life rich in experiences and opportunities. Thanks to a loving family, as well as a strong, enterprising and determined personality, I pursued my dreams, fought to achieve my goals, becoming an independent and fulfilled woman. Among my interests: nature, hiking, TV, music, games, cooking, reading and travels. My passion and propensity for foreign languages guided me in choosing my professional path. I have studied, worked and lived  abroad, graduating in Italy and in the United States. From 2014 to 2017 , I decided to put up  a travel agency for disabled people. Based on each customer's disability, wishes and needs, I created personalized travel solutions. Then, I got my Master Degree in the US where I also work teaching at University. In 2021 I published my first novel titled “Queen of hearts”. I published it in my country and of course, it is in Italian. It talks about a blind girl able to identify two soul mates just by listening their voices. Through this seemingly corny story, I wanted to bring people closer to our world, to the world of those who cannot see. At the moment, I am working as a private teacher and a translator. I have recently started a Youtube channel called “Inventures world”, based on immersive audio adventures. In my opinions, it’s pretty original, since Each adventure is narrated using the second person, so that the reader can feel involved in it. The sound effects and voices used help listeners to completely immerse themselves in the environments described. This project is aimed at those who are blind, but also at those who are fully sighted. It is a way to bring them closer to the way we see, perceive and experience the world.     Dr. Michelle Botha holds a doctoral degree in disability studies from the University of Cape Town, which focused on the identity-level impact of rehabilitation services on newly blind adults in South Africa. She also holds a M.Soc.sci in gender studies, where her work focused on the complex lived experiences of visually impaired women in South Africa.These interests are closely connected to her experience as a disabled woman, as well as her ongoing involvement in activism and the Non-profit disability service sector. She is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies at Stellenbosch University, expanding her work in critical rehabilitation studies, as well as research on education and wellbeing for young people with visual impairments in South Africa.
