#118: Overcoming guilt and making time for exercise

Do you struggle to fit in exercise? Are you telling yourself there’s never enough time to exercise? Not having time to go to the gym or get in a run is a common problem many women have when they think about wanting to improve their fitness. Doing it all and doing stuff for everybody else is much more important than you taking time for yourself to workout. I’m joined by Lucy-Anne Carney who is sharing her personal story of transformation from a demanding corporate career to becoming a bodybuilder, and what it taught her about having a clear goal and prioritising making it happen. Lucy now uses what she learned to help other women balance motherhood and their wellbeing through regular exercise. The conversation explores the societal pressures and responsibilities that hold women back from prioritising their own health and wellbeing, and offers tips on building habits and overcoming guilt. Lucy encourages you to prioritise movement for your future self and your children, and to do so by building healthy habits that are sustainable in the long term. In our conversation today we talk about: Incorporating movement and exercise into our lives, even with demanding careers and family responsibilities. The societal pressures and responsibilities often hold women back from prioritising their own health and wellbeing. How building habits and overcoming guilt are key to making time for exercise. Movement is key to maintaining good health and longevity. Knowing that your habits will teach your children the value of taking care of themselves. Learning how to prioritise and delegate in your family to make time for exercise and self-care. Knowing your why and staying committed to your goals can help you resist temptations and stay on track. Lucy’s 3 tips to make time for exercise through meal prepping, planning family meals, and finding ways to move that you enjoy. About Lucy-Anne: Lucy-Anne is an online fitness and nutrition coach specialising in helping people lose weight and build muscle without sacrificing balance in their lives. After a career as a major incident manager for a high street bank, she transitioned into fitness following a personal journey of competing as a bodybuilder, all while managing arthritis and balancing a demanding corporate role. Her experience of thriving despite challenges inspired her to study nutrition and personal training. Now, as a mum and coach, she is dedicated to supporting others in achieving their fitness goals with practical, sustainable approaches and without feeling that they’re sacrificing other areas of their lives. Grief and loss will be part of all of our lives at some point. Having resilience and also self-compassion to support yourself when you lose a loved one is so important. But so is it important to help you stay healthy and well in every way. I’m exploring this sensitive and very important topic with an incredible guest today - Lisa K. Boehm. Lisa is discussing the importance of resilience and sharing her personal journey after the tragic loss of her daughter, Katie, and how it transformed her understanding of grief. We talk about the various forms of loss, the significance of self-care, and the necessity of community support. Lisa emphasises that resilience is a choice and can be cultivated through small, meaningful steps. Our conversation highlights the need for women to connect and support each other, especially during challenging times. Having a supportive network and community can be a challenge when our lives are fast-paced and midlife has perhaps thrown many curveballs at you. The rising challenges women are facing to their health and the role of resilience to navigate this with strength and ease. Why community support is essential for building resilience. That grief can manifest in many forms beyond losing a loved one. It's important to allow yourself to feel and process grief. How self-care is foundational for mental health and healing. The way joy and grief can coexist; one does not negate the other. The importance of rediscovering yourself after loss and appreciating that this is a journey. About Lisa: Lisa K. Boehm’s life changed forever when her 17 year old daughter died suddenly in a car accident. She quickly discovered that our society struggles with death, loss, and grieving and has made it her mission to change that.
