I discovered them through their appearance on The Great Man Within podcast. They are highly listenable and are producing great conversations on issues I’m interested in. Two gripes: 1 Their phone alerts are always going off. Literally every interview I’ve heard with them I hear buzzes or dings. 2 I don’t buy their rationalizations for sex work. Titillation and objectification are a problem in our culture. In the attention economy there are many ways to make money but not all of them are healthy, and some of them are corrosive. Mercedes and Jade get a lot of mileage out of the word “shame.” They use the idea of moving past shame as an excuse to shut down anyone pointing out the negative effects of sex work. I am not casting shame on them, I just think that porn, titillation and sex work are part of a larger problem of objectification and dehumanization in our society and that M and J are justifying it because it’s making them money. And the idea of sneaking menswork content into onlyfans feels like a way of offsetting the negative stigma of how they are making money. At the very least, it is manipulative to lure customers in under one pretense and then try to engage them in another way. I think they call that bait and switch. Anyway, having said all that, Mercedes and Jade are very smart and curious and are highly skilled communicators. Podcasting seems to be an ideal medium for them.
