169 - Getting Undressed with Gregory Vetter of Alta Fresh Food Company

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring journey of Gregory Vetter, Founder and CEO of Alta Fresh Food Company and Homegrown Brands. He is the author of his upcoming book "Undressed : The Unfiltered Story of My Failed American Dream and How It Led to Success", were he shares his remarkable journey. As a child, Greg was fascinated by all sports and spent a lot of time outdoors, enjoying activities such as crabbing and fishing on the Severn River and playing lacrosse. This upbringing laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial spirit and focus on the environment. After college, Greg majored in business, but he didn't have a clear idea of which path to take. To gain insight, he decided to interview the fathers of his lacrosse teammates, who were from various backgrounds, including old money, commercial real estate, and hedge funds. This experience sparked his interest in business and inspired him to read books on successful people, such as Warren Buffett and Walton. Greg spent his free time researching and reading about business and entrepreneurship, which further fueled his passion. After graduating, Greg wrote a thesis on global commercial real estate companies, believing he wanted to pursue a career in real estate finance. However, his first job as a loan officer's assistant was unfulfilling, and he soon realized the real world was not as he expected. This experience was an important turning point for Greg, as it led him to re-evaluate his priorities and pursue his true passion. The turning point for Greg came when he had an epiphany while standing on his head in his living room. This unusual moment led him to call a friend who, surprisingly, had taken his mom's salad dressing from his house without asking. This revelation sparked the idea to start a salad dressing company. Greg and his wife started small, making the dressing in their home kitchen and selling it to local grocery stores. Through dedication and hard work, they grew the company into a national brand, earning a reputation with a sales record and multiple awards. He went on to be selected as Inc Magazine's 35 under 35 and Entrepreneur of the Year. Greg's journey serves as a reminder that our passions can arise from unexpected moments and that it's essential to stay open-minded and willing to take risks. Key insights from his story include: * The importance of reading and learning about successful people and businesses * The value of diversity in exploring different career paths * The power of self-reflection and being willing to pivot when unfulfilled * The importance of family support and collaboration in entrepreneurial ventures The inspiring journey of Greg Vetter serves as a reminder that success often requires taking risks, staying flexible, and being true to oneself. By embracing these principles, entrepreneurs can unlock their potential and create a lasting impact in their industries. 167 - DC Water's Innovative Approach with David Gadis of DC Water

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we meet David Gadis, CEO and General Manager of DC Water to discuss the company's mission and accomplishments. As a leading provider of drinking water and wastewater treatment services, DC Water serves over 2 million customers in the Washington, D.C. area and surrounding counties. The company's wastewater treatment plant is one of the largest and most advanced in the world, processing over 1 billion gallons of wastewater daily. Additionally, DC Water produces a fertilizer product made from treated wastewater, which is sold to local farmers, landscaping companies, and restoration projects. David highlights the company's efforts to improve water quality in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. The Anacostia River, previously rated as an "F" grade, has improved significantly due to DC Water's efforts, now approaching a "C" grade. The company's deep tunnel project has also reduced flooding in the district and improved the Potomac River's water quality, making it now healthy and fishable. This achievement can be attributed to the reduction of wastewater entering the river, allowing it to "refresh itself." DC Water is committed to creating a sustainable energy system. The company has chosen to build a deep tunnel project and is now reusing wastewater energy to heat and cool its headquarters building. Furthermore, DC Water harvests rainwater from its rooftop and parking lots to reuse for non-potable purposes. David shares his personal story, discussing his background and how it has shaped his career. He is not originally from the DMV area but grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, where his father worked at the Indianapolis Water Company for over 40 years. David is a third-generation water professional and has worked in the industry since college. He credits his father with teaching him about goal setting and key performance indicators, which he still uses in his work. He emphasizes the importance of setting goals and reviewing them regularly, highlighting his experience as a college basketball player. He shares how his father taught him leadership skills, which helped him improve his game and achieve success. He also discusses the importance of education and how it can aid in overcoming unexpected setbacks. Some key takeaways from David's experience include: * Setting clear goals and tracking progress is crucial for success * Leadership skills can be developed through experience and guidance from others * Giving people grace, empathy, and sympathy can lead to greater success and teamwork * Education is important and should be prioritized, especially in case of unexpected setbacks or changes in plans. 165 - The Power of Positive Media with Laura Evans Manatos of Laura Evans Media

In this engaging episode of The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla, he chats with Laura Evans Manatos, President and CEO of Laura Evans Media out of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In a digital age where news consumption has become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, the media plays a crucial role in shaping our perceptions and influencing our opinions. However, with the rise of clickbait headlines and emotional stories designed to attract viewer attention, the line between fact and fiction has become increasingly blurred. In this episode we will delve and explore her perspective on the negative impact of constant negative news on mental health, the role of news organizations in providing a balanced representation of the world, and the importance of telling meaningful stories about people making a positive impact in their communities. In addition to highlighting the importance of good news media, Laura shares her own personal experience as a journalist, which was shaped by an innate curiosity about news and current events. From setting up a camera in their kitchen to practicing reporting to internships at local stations, her journey as a journalist is a testament of her passion for storytelling and commitment to making a beneficial influence. We are reminded of the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on our lives. Laura's team is doing incredible work to shift the narrative and bring more positivity to our media landscape. By staying informed, staying engaged, and staying positive, we can create a better world for ourselves and those around us. We discuss how traditional media often focuses on what sells, such as shock value and emotional stories, at the expense of telling meaningful stories that promote social change and inspire individuals. She draws attention to the successful example of John Krasinski's good news network during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was eventually sold for tens of millions of dollars. She believes that there is a niche for good news media and that newsrooms are getting smarter about finding balance and telling more positive stories. By providing a platform for uplifting and inspiring content, news organizations can not only promote social change but also contribute to a more positive and hopeful global narrative. By understanding the impact of media representation and promoting a balanced and positive portrayal of the world, we can work towards creating a more informed, empathetic, and hopeful global community.
