A Breath of Fresh Earth explores the great things happening in the fight for a clean planet. Each week I'll give a shout-out to people making a huge impact with new technologies and ideas. I call them "Climate Heroes". We have our share of climate villains, too. The President isn't the only one I have a problem with. (I'll try to avoid saying his name during the show) I'll tell you about new products available to purchase, and who to follow on social media, reviews of environmentally themed movies, books, and songs, apps and websites, the air quality index and the current CO2 level. I'll tell you exciting news about wind and solar energy, plant-based food, electronic vehicles, the fight against plastic in the ocean, the EPA, and much more. Best of all, I'll give you easy steps to help in this battle and you won't have to leave the comfort of your couch to do it!

Welcome to a special episode of a breath of fresh earth to celebrate Halloween in the United States. I present the first annual Halloween doom and gloom tour, rising temperatures, melting, Arctic ice, drought, desertification, and other effects of climate change are not examples of future troubles. They are a reality today. During this episode, I'll speak to a few of the reasons we're facing a catastrophic future. The way a large segment of the population in the United States is facing the pandemic by avoiding wearing masks and not socially distancing is a good analogy to climate change. These people either don't believe anything, bad will happen to them, or it will happen to someone else or they believe what the current president tells them. He's giving them false hope and bad information, much like fossil fuel proponents seek to confuse deflect and deny. What is crystal clear? Fossil fuels are killing us toss in a gazillion pieces of plastic everywhere, including inside us.
Rick (https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/Edit?token=Cki7fdapEZAelnsI4mrL-ypoY3J1LmBAreJ1KaTQaahC5ZKLfKWCoGL2elzvVI_mss9JQKVxiauSittkryAq9dJT2co&loadFrom=DocumentDeeplink&ts=124.07 (02:04)):
And we're in serious trouble. In the end, we see reports of non mask wearers, recording messages from a hospital facing death due to the virus, begging others, to listen to the experts, the scientists, and to protect themselves from a deadly foe climate change will be a more difficult opponent to beat. There's no vaccine for climate change and pollution, only hard decisions and a commitment to change how we heat and cool our homes, transport ourselves around the planet and how products we don't use anymore are slipping into streams, rivers, lakes, and

Dutch vendor Boyan Slat founded the ocean cleanup at the age of 18 in his hometown of Delphi, the Netherlands, it all started when then 16 year old Boyan was diving in Greece and saw more plastic than fish. He devoted his high school science project to understanding the problem and research why cleanup was considered impossible. It became clear that a cleanup using vessels and nets would take thousands of years, cost tens of billions of dollars and harmful to sea life. There are five major plastic accumulation zones in the world where ocean currents converge. We learned about them when we featured Marcus Erickson and his company five gyres in episode 12, these accumulation zones are commonly called garbage patches. The majority of ocean plastic will not go away by itself, but instead it slowly breaks down into microplastic. Boyan came up with an idea to develop a passive concentration system.

Instead of going after the plastic, he lets the plastic come to him, led by slot. Now 26, the ocean cleanup is designing and developing cleanup systems to what is already polluting our oceans into intercept plastic on its way to the ocean via rivers. Speaking of rivers, slot belt, the interceptor, the interceptor is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world's oceans. Coming from rivers, it is a hundred percent solar powered extracts pla

What does it really cost to drive an electric car? Electricity isn't free. The energy department created something called the E-gallon to help people understand the cost of driving an electric car whats an Egallon? It represents the cost of fueling a vehicle with electricity compared to a similar vehicle that runs on gas. It's gives us a chance to compare the cost of driving an electric car with a similar sized car that uses gasoline. Right now, it's reasonable to say it would be about 50% less to charge your vehicle with electricity than to fill it up with gasoline. Now, this does not consider the peace of mind knowing that you're not contributing to poisoning the planet. That's gotta be worth something. It also does not include the cost of maintaining your electric car, which is about $800 a year, less than a traditional combustion engine with all its parts and wear and tear.
