    By the time Jesus and his followers arrive at the Garden of Gethsemane, it seems that the anguish Jesus is feeling is too great for him to focus on much else. Jesus knows this is the night of his arrest, and the beginning of the cruelty he would face, before his death over the weekend. What we see is that while Jesus was well aware of His own testing, He was also aware of a war that would rage, for the minds, hearts, and souls of His disciples, and this evening Jesus wanted them to be victorious over the temptations they were facing.     In the dimly lit room of this Passover meal, Jesus pours it all out for his disciples, and its poured out now for us too. Our failure is inevitable, all kinds of failure, especially our failure in trying to follow Jesus. But our failure isnt final, Jesus says, if we learn to trust. We dont trust in our wisdom or way or resolve. Failure isnt final if we trust in Jesus alone his action, his wisdom, his way.     A People Serving, Part 2

    Jesus washes the disciples feet and serves them a meal that is all about his ultimate act of self-giving love, and the disciples are arguing about position. What strikes me is not how clueless the disciples are, but how much we are still like this. It is so easy for us to bring broken power dynamics into the heart of Jesus own family the church. Driven by our own fears of scarcity and hunger for significance, we wake up and discover a desire to serve Jesus has become a drive towards selfish ambition. In the midst of all of this stands Jesus, quietly but firmly showing us through word and action a better way. Prising apart our clenched, compulsive fists, he says, you are not to be like that.     One of the things the gospels are trying to get across to us is that if we want to know what God is like we should look no further than Jesuswhich was and is still a shocking thought. Look at this man, in his authority, in his humility, in his generosity, even in his self-imposed vulnerability, and youll find yourself looking at the real God.
