    Report from Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts in Asheville

So far more than 200 people are confirmed dead and the estimated damage could be as high as $200 billion worth.  Among the hardest hit areas is Asheville, North Carolina whose water system has been devastated, where hundreds of thousands remain without power or internet access, and where a thriving arts district has been severely flooded. To make matters worse, Donald Trump and his billionaire backer Elon Musk have fueled wild conspiracy theories, in part based on their continued demonization of undocumented immigrants.     A Progress 2025 Vision of Climate Justice

Project 2025 aims to cut the size and scope of federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Weather Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, claiming they have infiltrated the federal government and are “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.” It calls for the U.S. to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change so the U.S. wouldn’t need to track, report, or reduce emissions.  An August 2024 study determined that if all of the document’s climate-related recommendations were implemented, the U.S. would spew an additional 2.7 billion tons of climate-heating emissions into the atmosphere by 2030.  This post is for subscribers only Subscribe now Already have an account?     California Ballot Measure Worsens Over Incarceration

Its authors denounce criminal justice reform efforts, and promote federal oversight of jurisdictions where police divestment efforts have had some success.  The “tough-on-crime” approach has champions both among Republicans and Democrats, in spite of the fact that in 2020, many elites claiming to support racial justice vowed changes to violent policing in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis.  What would a progressive vision of racial justice and policing look like? There has been for decades an active movement to divest from policing with an eye toward abolishing police and prisons altogether. That movement offers some answers to the question.     Ending “Death by Incarceration”

The case seeks to end mandatory life in prison without parole–what many refer to as “death by incarceration”--sentences for felony murder. The plaintiff in the case is one Derek Lee who is serving a life sentence without parole for a felony murder conviction. Except that he never killed anyone, nor intended to kill.     Progress 2025 Vision for Voting Rights

From Florida governor Ron DeSantis’ election police arresting Black voters to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s recent raids on Latino civil rights activists, conservatives appear afraid of democracy.  The ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 promotes targeting election workers in multiple states, casts doubt on the legitimacy of mail-in ballots, and continues the decades-long quest to undo the civil rights movement’s voting gains, including eliminating the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, which has been at the forefront of bringing lawsuits against counties and states that violate voting rights statutes.  What would a progressive vision of voting rights look like instead?
