Marriage Coaching vs. Counseling: The Hidden Difference

Should you invest in marriage coaching or marriage counseling? What's the difference? From a practical point of view, marriage coaching could be your best bet for reviving your marriage. I keep hearing that "coaches don't teach." Instead they "ask questions" and "listen for patterns." That doesn't sound like the definition of "coaching" to me. It sounds like counseling. Most counselors assume you already know the answers and just need to talk and/or complain and lose long enough to figure it out on your own. You're already talking and/or complaining and losing without paying a counselor, and it doesn't work. What if your son's football coach took that approach? Instead, what if the problem is that you really don't know what works, what doesn't, and why in your marriage? That's why you're talking and/or complaining about your marriage and losing all the time. What do YOU think you need to help you get to a higher level of marital satisfaction? If you wanted help with your marriage, wouldn't you want someone who knows how relationships work and is willing to teach you what she has learned through years of study, training, and experience? The Role of Emotions in Couple's Communication

If you want to succeed in marriage, you must understand emotions in couple's communication. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, your first response to any situation is emotional. You are created that way. Our emotions are like a barometer designed to tell us that something is going on inside of us or in the space around us. So it’s our job to figure out what our feelings are telling us about what’s happening and what we can do in response.
