Improving Palliative Care - Leeroy William (ANZSPM)

Improving Palliative Care - Leeroy William (ANZSPM)

Today's episode is all about Palliative Care, and we’re very lucky to be joined by Leeroy William to help us unpack this complex area.
Leeroy is the President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine. He’s also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Monash and Clinical Director of supportive and Palliative Care at Eastern Health in Melbourne.

He came on the show to help us understand the scope of palliative care, and how it encompasses much more than just care in the final moments of someone’s life.

For a lot of our listeners working in the aged care space, death and dying are common scenarios and in this interview Leeroy shares with us a few tools to help support people better as they’re approaching the end of their lives.

We're also very excited to let you know that Leeroy has recently joined the SilVR Adventures' Board of Advisors and is helping with our plans to bring the benefits of Virtual Reality to people in palliative care.

As always if you enjoy the show, we’d love it if you subscribed and maybe even left a review!

Interdependence and Empowerment - Emi Kiyota (Ibasho)

Interdependence and Empowerment - Emi Kiyota (Ibasho)

Today, we're talking to Emi Kiyota, an ageing design expert and self described Environmental Gerontologist.
She’s also the founder of Ibasho, a not-for-profit organisation that helps older adults create sustainable and socially integrated communities that places elders and their value at the heart of the organisation.

She’s helped build a few of these, including locations in Nepal, the Philippines and Northern Japan which we talk about in this episode.

Emi’s work is all about empowering older adults to continue contributing to society, and it was great to hear her explain the concepts of Ibasho and why interdependent communities are the future of care.

    July Panel Special: Activities Planning

    July Panel Special: Activities Planning

Today, we're super excited to share that we'll be releasing our first episode of a new monthly panel show of the podcast!
After feedback from you guys - our listeners, we decided to break up our in-depth one-on-one interviews and present an open discussion on a specific topic - starting with Activities and Recreation in aged care.

We’ve assembled an international panel of experts and practitioners to share their experiences and insights in this vast field and how we can overcome some common challenges and how we can better engage care recipients.

How do you engage residents with limited budgets and staffing?
Why is the family the biggest asset in engagement planning?
How do you organise activities for residents who stay up late?

We get answers to all these questions and more, as you'll hear the diverse opinions of activities specialists from around the world as we warmly welcome our guests Lee-Fay Low and Maurie Voisey-Barlin (Aus), Orquidea Tamayo Mortera (NZ), Kelly Stranburg and Sara Kyle (USA), bringing their passion and experience to this spirited discussion!

This conversation raises a lot of questions, like the need for spontaneity in activities programs, who’s responsible for engagement and some ways to develop more personal and effective programs for care recipients.

This is a brand new format, you might notice it’s a longer episode, and we loved the free flowing nature of the conversation and this episode also features original music from our host Ash de Neef, which really adds to the mood!

We’ll be presenting these informal conversations with international experts on a range of topics every month - so stay tuned and subscribe!

Dementia Through The Disability Lens - Kate Swaffer (Dementia Alliance International)

Dementia Through The Disability Lens - Kate Swaffer (Dementia Alliance International)

Today, we're delighted to welcome Kate Swaffer on to the Aged Care Enrichment Podcast. Kate is one of Australia’s most prominent advocates for the rights of people living with dementia. She herself was diagnosed with early onset dementia 13 years ago and is particularly passionate about ensuring that the post diagnostic process for people living with dementia improves dramatically.
She was the first person living with dementia to be invited to give a keynote speech to the World Health Organisation. She was also South Australia’s Australian of the Year for 2017 and co-founded the organisation Dementia Alliance International, a peer support network for people living with dementia.

This episode is all about viewing dementia as a condition that causes disabilities, and by interpreting the symptoms of dementia as specific disabilities, care and support for people living with dementia will improve drastically. There’s a lot more really interesting information in this episode, and we were thrilled to get the chance to talk to Kate.

One additional note, if you’re enjoying this podcast, then what's the best way you can support us? Helping Seniors Write Their Stories - Angela Burton (Feet to the Fire Writer's Workshops)

Helping Seniors Write Their Stories - Angela Burton (Feet to the Fire Writer's Workshops)

Today, we're talking to Angela Burton. Angela is the creator of the Feet to the Fire Writers Workshops, a writing program that encourages older adults to share and relive their stories and memories through the process of writing.
She’s also the host of the podcast, the Feet to the Fire Writer’s Workshops Outloud where she interviews older adults from her writing programs and invites them to share some of their writing - and we’ll be hearing a snippet from that program too.

In this conversation we talked a lot about the creative process and why that’s important for people of all ages, why the process of writing is more important than the outcome, and how to bring value to the lives of older adults through creativity.
