Al Deeds, just 22 years old, wondered if he could clear away all the traces of his life, to rebuild upon an empty foundation. The year is 1973, Picasso will soon be dead. Al Deeds, on the cusp of adulthood, decides to jettison all aspects of his young life - art college, a young wife, and an uncertain future - in order to embark upon a road trip which will take him across America.

    Al and Danton hitchhike to Mr. Harold's house, encountering road refugees led by Gypsy, a Chicagoan on the run from a recent disaster. Mr. Harold, Al's stepfather, lives with Braun, an unprincipled teen and High School student, who is Al's alcohol-loving brother. Mr. Harold welcomes Al into his home, only requesting that he prevent Braun from drug dealing during their stay. Al gets a job that keeps him away from Mr. Harold's home, allowing Danton and Braun to set up a daytime operation: the sale of LSD and cannabis.

    Al and Danton prepare for their departure by living rent-free at Mr. Harold's house. When Al goes off to earn money in a Gold Country hotel and bar, Danton and Braun peddle cannabis and LSD, while avoiding Mr. Harold's not very watchful eye.

    Al and Danton depart Mr. Harold's house in the green Volkswagen Beetle. Unaware that the vehicle's registration has expired, they are stopped by police officers in Nevada and Utah. In Colorado they are detained by Officer Seatole and his (nearly) silent partner, Silas.

    Deputy Slim comes to the cell block to share small town gossip with the prisoners. DeKalb and the inmates teach Al to smoke cigarettes. Larry, the trustee, delivers ice-cold, home-cooked meals. Officer Seatole introduces Al and Danton to an illiterate judge.

    Thanks to Mr. Harold, J.G. Bright, attorney at law, arrives to spring them from jail, with a promise to return for a probation hearing in six days. Leaving behind the Volkswagen as bail, Al and Danton fly to Boulder, Colorado where the attorney is paid half of the money in their possession - as a partial payment. For nearly a week, Al is charmed by the generous, beautiful, and mysterious, Holly. Danton sulks in a corner, writing poetry, and smoking a mountain of Holly's cannabis flowers.

    Mountain man, Greg, arrives before dawn to drive them over the mountain to their probation hearing. Seatole is upset that they were given parole, so he attempts to sabotage their departure. Al and Danton return to the road.
