    Why Faith, Why Church

    In this episode… We talk about why young adults claim a Christian identity, what love and struggles they have with the Episcopal Church, what they long for in their spiritual lives, and how the scare “E” word (Evangelism) is actually a blessing and gift to them and the church.  About the Hosts Clare Stern-Burbano (she/her) is a member of the laity and currently a college, youth, and children’s minister at a parish in Kansas City, MO and third-year seminarian at Univ. of Dubuque Theological Seminary and a candidate for Anglican Studies at Bishop Kemper School for Ministry. She hopes of one day becoming an Episcopal priest and is discerning in the Diocese of Kansas. Clare comes from an interfaith family and found a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church when she was nine years old.  Hayley Cobb (she/her) is a cradle Episcopalian and southwest Missouri native. A longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO (W. MO), Hayley has been helping lead the church's youth program since 2022. She also serves as a LEM, acolyte, and is a member of the parish Youth & Children’s Commission. Hayley is in her second year on Diocesan Council and recently served on the Bishop Search Committee for the 9th Bishop of West Missouri.Professionally, Hayley is the Communications Director for Leadership Springfield, a nonprofit that offers community leadership programs to professionals and students, including Rosie, a free advocacy network for women in the region. The Rev. Karen Schlabach (she/her) started as the Youth Missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas in January 2013 and her title has changed four times since then, but she's currently the Youth, Young Adult & Campus Missioner. She has been involved as an adult with the diocesan youth program since 2005 and campus ministry program since 2007. Karen was an active youth in Kansas from 1989-1995, and as a college student participated in Campus Ministry at K-State in 1995-96. Karen was the Youth Minister at St. Michael and All Angels from 2008-2012, and prior to that worked as an Academic Advisor at UTA and UMKC and Associate Registrar at UMKC. Karen has a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, is an EFM graduate, and received a Certificate of Presbyterial Studies from the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry. She was ordained to the priesthood in January 2022. In her free time she enjoys reading novels, Lego video games on her Switch, and being ordered around by her personal trainer. She lives in Merriam, KS, with her husband Mike and dog Cherry. The Rev. David Wilcox (he/him) Serves as the Missioner for Youth Ministry in the Diocese of West Missouri and as Assisting Priest at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Kansas City. Before finding his way to the Episcopal Church in 2015 David spent time in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is passionate about the Gospel, formation, history, coffee and little known (and less cared about) information. David and his husband Zach live in Belton with their energetic (and not at all spoiled) dog Ollie. The Rev. Caroline Howard (she/her) serves as curate for creation care in the diocese of Kansas.  About our Guests Glenn Green (she/her) is a young adult in the Diocese of W. MO and attends Church of the Redeemer in Parkville, MO. She has been a long life Episcopalian worshiping in several different states before calling Kansas City Home. In her free time, she plays bass and helps with the youth ministry program at Redeemer.  Mason Weber (he/him) is a young adult in the Diocese of KS and attends St. Paul’s in Manhattan, KS. Mason also serves as a Trustee in the Diocese of KS, serves as a counselor at Episcopal Church Mega Camp for elementary students and is currently pursuing a degree in social work.   About the Podcast Team Zach Phillips (he/him) As Communications Director (W. MO), Zach’s focus is to help promote churches and communicate each parish and congregations’ message across the diocese to other members. He also provides and manages website hosting and access to administrative services to the churches of the diocese, shares news of what’s going on in the diocese and the general Church, plus gives advice and training on communication methods, best practices, and technologies. In his free time, Zach enjoys taking walks with his husband, David, and their dogs Ollie and Pixie. He also enjoys playing video and board games with his friends, watching Marvel films, and cooking new dishes.  Chad Senuta (he/him) serves as Director of Communications for the Episcopal DIocese of Kansas. He attended Kansas State University, where he studied Education. Chad has over twenty years of experience in youth and young adult ministry, serving both the dioceses of Kansas and Chicago. He is married to the Rev. Lisa Senuta and has two children, Charlie and Bethany. He enjoys watch collecting, photography, rock and roll music, watching movies, and Dr. Pepper. The Rev.     Faithful Resolutions

    In this episode… we talk about resolutions, policies, and stances of the Episcopal Church and more specifically the Diocese of W. Collin was raised in the Episcopal Church, studied religion and conservation in undergraduate, and completed his seminary studies at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas.    About our Guests:    The Reverend Robin Rusconi  Robin was raised in the Kansas City metro on the Kansas side and has 4 brothers. She was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and attended Catholic grade school and high school. She first felt the call to ordained ministry in undergrad but did not see a path forward. Before she and her husband Jae married, they joined the Episcopal church. She formally began her discernment process 2019-2020 - when her youngest child was in high school.     Robin has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate from The University of Kansas and a Certificate in Diaconate Studies from The Bishop Kemper School for Ministry. She was ordained to the diaconate in June 2023. Robin is currently completing a 1-year chaplain residency at St. Luke’s Health System.     Tara Bennett   is chair of the Peace and Justice Committee for the Diocese of West Missouri. A member of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, she is also an active volunteer with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, serving as Missouri State Legislative Lead for a number of years. For this conversation we are joined by Rt. Rev. Cathleen Bascom, 10th Bishop of Kansas and Riley Demo, a young adult who is a graduate student at Johns Hopkins Blomberg School of Public Health. Collin was raised in the Episcopal Church, studied religion and conservation in undergraduate, and completed his seminary studies at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas.   About our Guests:   The Right Reverend Cathleen Chittenden Bascom, D.Min.,  was ordained and consecrated as the 10th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas on Saturday, March 2, 2019, in Grace Cathedral, Topeka. The chief consecrator was Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. Bishop Alan Scarfe of Iowa was the preacher. She is the first woman to serve as bishop of the diocese.   She had a faith experience that was nurtured at the Canterbury House and Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, where she explored a call to ordination. After seminary she served as curate for three years at St. Gregory’s in Deerfield, Ill. She then returned to Kansas to help replant campus ministry at K-State, Washburn and Wichita State from 1993-2001, where she initiated the purchase of the St. Francis Canterbury House in Manhattan.   In 2018 she was named to a three-year term on the Episcopal Church’s Task Force on Care of Creation and Environmental Racism.   She is married to Tim Bascom, and they have two adult sons, Conrad and Luke. Bishop Cathleen likes to garden, cross country ski, travel, and enjoy the blessings of family and friends. (Bio provided courtesy of the Diocese of Kansas).    Riley Demo  is a first-year graduate student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public pursuing studies in ScM Environmental Health and Engineering she is also seeking certifications in Risk Science & Public Policy, Food Systems, the Environment & Public Health, and Climate Change & Public Health. She is involved in climate writing and storytelling through the university as well! Riley is originally from the Kansas City area where her parents both serve as Episcopal priests at St. Thomas in Overland Park. While in Baltimore, Riley services at Old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and has started to become more involved in their community while also focusing on Urban Agriculture outreach through a local interfaith network. Collin was raised in the Episcopal Church, studied religion and conservation in undergraduate, and completed his seminary studies at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas.      About our Guests:  Sarah Lagergren is wife to Blain Lagergren and proud mother to George, 8, and Freya, 5.  She was born and raised in Kansas City, MO – daughter of Jeff and Connie Burr, and sister to Adriane (Burr) Arnold.  She attended William Jewell College and was part of the Oxbridge Honors Program, graduating initially in 2005 with her degree in History, and a minor in Chemistry.  After working for the State Department’s International Visitors Center here in KC briefly, and then as an analytical chemist at a generic pharmaceutical company, she decided to go back to William Jewell to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing in the accelerated program.  In 2007, she was hired as a registered nurse at a local pediatric hospital and still is employed at the same institution.  In 2013, she graduated from the University of Missouri with her master’s degree in nursing as an Acute Care Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and began to work as a pediatric cardiac advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).  In 2019, she received her doctorate in nursing practice from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She continues to work as an APRN within inpatient pediatric cardiology and is the manager of the APRNs within this area.  In her free time, she enjoys being with her family and friends cooking or eating great food, the outdoors, and going on travel adventures.  She wishes she had more time for quiet reflection, meditation/yoga, and physical activity.    Relevant links…    Suggestions and Comments for the Co-hosts? Collin was raised in the Episcopal Church, studied religion and conservation in undergraduate, and completed his seminary studies at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas.    About our Guests:    Deacon Barbara (she/her) was born in Cocoa Beach, FL and moved with her family to Alaska and New York before settling in Kansas City when her Father retired from the Air Force. A 'cradle' Episcopalian, Barbara was confirmed at the then St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (now St. Peter's and All Saints) while living at Richards-Gebauer AFB. She graduated from Raytown High School and retired as a Human Resources Director after a career with the federal government.       Barbara attended St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Raytown for over 35 years and was Ordained in 2022.  Barbara serves as Deacon at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Kansas City. She also serves as the Intake Officer for the Diocese of West Missouri.  Adam James is a deacon and digital evangelist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Kansas City, facilitating the parish's livestreaming efforts, local podcast programming, and social media management. Adam spent fifteen years serving the Kansas City Fire Department as a firefighter, emergency medical technician, and union business agent before a career-ending injury caused him to retire medically.
