    Margaret Partridge Lighting the Way

    Episode 5: Margaret Partridge Author Henrietta Heald reads: Margaret Partridge loved everything about engineering and devoted her entire professional life to its practice – and to encouraging and training young women engineers. In 1919 she founded her own electrical consulting business in Devon, whose purpose was to provide lighting and electrical power for local communities. ‘For sheer exciting experience,’ she wrote, ‘give me a town to light!’  Margaret was a moving force behind the creation in 1924 of the Electrical Association for Women, chief author of the popularElectrical Handbook for Women and a regular contributor to the EAW’s journal,Electrical Age.  Among the many female apprentices employed at the Devon firm of M. Partridge & Co. was Beatrice ‘Tilly’ Shilling, who would make her mark as an aeronautical engineer in the Second World War with an invention reckoned to have saved the lives of many airmen.     Episode 4: Laura Annie Willson Born in 1877 in Halifax, west Yorkshire, Laura Annie Willson grew up in poverty and started work at the age of ten, as a ‘half-timer’ in a local mill. Twice imprisoned for her political activities, she later became co-director of a highly successful engineering business, employing mostly women, and did much to improve working conditions.  Laura Annie was a founder member of both the Women’s Engineering Society and the Electrical Association for Women. She designed and built hundreds of modern homes for working people, describing house-building as ‘a form of engineering of the domestic kind’. In 1928 she spoke of being at the start of a ‘golden age’ for women, especially those entering the business world. ‘Industry has become fascinating and profitable to women,’ she said, ‘and we want to play our full part in that new life.’ Dear Listeners, Did you enjoy number 4 podcast in this series?     Lady Rhondda Feminist Campaigner

    Episode 3: Margaret Haig Thomas, Viscountess Rhondda Author Henrietta Heald Reads; Ardent suffragette and survivor of the Lusitania disaster, Margaret Haig Thomas inherited a viscountcy on the death of her father, the Liberal politician D. A. Thomas, Viscount Rhondda of Llanwern, but was disqualified by her sex from sitting in the House of Lords. She spent her whole life campaigning for changes to laws that discriminated against women. In 1920 Lady Rhondda founded a political weekly calledTime and Tide, which supported left-wing and feminist causes. Immensely rich and influential, she sat on 33 company boards during her lifetime and chaired seven of them. In 1926 she became the first female president of the Institute of Directors. From the start, Lady Rhondda was a keen supporter, both morally and financially, of the Women’s Engineering Society, founded in 1919. In alliance with other powerful women, she moved in political and social circles that helped to bring the society to national prominence.     Rachel Parsons Pioneering Engineer

    Episode 2: Rachel Parsons Born in 1885, Rachel Parsons was a woman of ‘firsts’, breaking the boundaries of Edwardian convention. Scientific and technological genius ran in her family, and in 1910 she became the first woman to study engineering at Cambridge University. Her pioneering career continued during the Great War, when she was appointed a director of an engineering firm in Newcastle upon Tyne, then the powerhouse of British industry. Responsible for supervising the largely female workforce, she later joined the Ministry of Munitions and trained women around the country. In 1919, Rachel and her mother founded the Women’s Engineering Society to champion female workers in industry. To advance the cause, Rachel entered politics, winning a seat on the London County Council and standing for Parliament. But – regarded as a ‘difficult’ woman – her ambitions were thwarted, and her life ended in dramatic tragedy.
