Each episode we interview a subject to ask the questions what does it mean to be an Outsider? How does being an Outsider inform the way that they navigate their creative, personal lives and the ways they carve out a place for themselves in the world? The Outsiders is hosted by JK Hobson who's life as a musician and Fulbright scholar landed him in Saigon, Vietnam where he performs standup comedy and "collects" friends from all walks of life, many of whom he considers to be Outsiders!

    The Outsiders: Season 1 Episode 2 - Comedian Erick Garcia

    On this episode of The Outsiders had the fortune of getting to speak with comedian Erick Garcia. Erick has been a mainstay of the Vietnam comedy scene for the past 6 years, first in Hanoi, and for the past year in Saigon. We talked about Erick navigating having grown up "between worlds" as the son of Mexican immigrants who later went onto pursue academia and of course standup comedy. Of course, we also talked about what it means to be an "outsider" and how that informs the way that Erick performs his art and navigates his life.  Check out this special episode that wee recorded a few days before Erick would return to the United States, to pursue fame, fortune, success and "all the things."     The Outsiders: Season 1 Episode 1 : Comedian - Vu Minh Tu

    On our first episode of The Outsiders we interview comedian/visual artist Vu Minh Tu! We went deep with this one discussing Covid-19 and the recent lockdowns in Vietnam, the origins of Tu's and JK's friendship, Tu's upbringing, schooling and childhood, laissez faire parenting, Tu cursing like she was possessed as a small child, the gift of truancy, authenticity, suicidal failures, the nature of self, drugs, existing in a body, confrontation through comedy, Vietnamese women and the ways they defy stereotypes of Asian women, Tu's vaginal health, the freedom that comes with leaving some things undefined, finding our commonalities, secret identities, finding the funny in common folks, and of course what it is to be an Outsider and how she navigates life as one!
