Less busy, more impact - A conversation with Chris Lovett

Less busy, more impact - A conversation with Chris Lovett

The latest neuroscience studies on our brain suggest that every time we switch tasks (what we might traditionally call multi-tasking), it's "expensive" for us in terms of lost time and productivity. For example, have you ever been in a Zoom meeting and tried to write an email or send a message at the same time?

We might not think that this is a big deal, but over the course of a day the cumulative effect is that we lose around 40 percent of our productivity.

If we are trying to do a complicated task that requires concentration, it means we're more likely to make errors and lose even more time in the switching process.

Be laser focused, and remind yourself of the mantra of Chris Lovett today: Less busy, more impact.

Contrary to what the world wants to impose and rule, being always busy is not a good sign of progress, of moving forward.

Signs of Civilization, how punctuation changed history

Signs of Civilization, how punctuation changed history

Bård Borch Michalsen has worked as a journalist and editor in several Norwegian newspapers. He now teaches professional communication at UiT / The Arctic University of Norway.

With the art of printing, reading books moved from being an act meant to be performed by priests and other authorities into an individual, even private, activity. This change helped spark the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. And punctuation played an important role: As long as texts were read out loud by experts only there was no use for punctuation to mark pauses, full stops or questions. And thus, the author holds punctuation - the period, the comma, the exclamation mark, the question mark and the semicolon – helped shape modern day Europe as we know it.

Signs of Civilization tells this rich cultural history of punctuation. It also provides a practical introduction to the rules of punctuation, adapted to our digital age.

'Punctuation is not only an important part of our language code; an advanced system of punctuation has been a driving force in our entire Western Civilisation. Nothing less.'

With the invention of printing, reading books moved from being an act only performed by priests and aristocrats into an individual, even private, activity. This change helped spark the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution - in which punctuation played a crucial role. As long as texts were read out loud only by an educated elite there was no need for punctuation to mark pauses, full stops or questions.

So punctuation - the full stop, the comma, the exclamation mark, the question mark and the semicolon - helped shape modern-day Europe as we know it.

The author´s axiom is the latin phrase. CARPE DIEM. How relevant to our days! SEIZE THE DAY! Do what it takes in the present moment.

    Fully living the present time

    Fully living the present time

Carl Honoré is an award-winning writer, broadcaster, and TED speaker. He is the voice of the global Slow Movement.

Carl travels the world to deliver powerful keynotes that put time and tempo in a whole new light. His counter-intuitive message is simple but game-changing: To thrive in a fast world, you have to slow down.

Carl’s first book, In Praise of Slow, chronicles the global trend toward putting on the brakes in everything from work to food to parenting. The Financial Times said it is “to the Slow Movement what Das Kapital is to communism.”

Here is the link to watch one of his famous TedTalk about the ATTITUDE we should embrace to live with positivism and optimism with the passing of time, as we age.

And below his other super famous TedTalk "In praise of slowness".

All his books are essential reading for a happier, healthier, more productive life. Do not miss the present time, the NOW. It is the only sure thing we have! Seize it!

The time has always been the same before and after social media. Time is not going faster than in the past. The clock clicks, as it has always done.

Every day, I try to do less and concentrate more. Less is always more, thanks a lot, Carl!

The Customer Culture Experience, a conversation with Dr. Linden Brown

Dr. Linden Brown has worked as a management consultant, academic, and entrepreneur in start-up organizations. For more than 20 years, he has worked with multi-national firms in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific to develop their market-focus capabilities and business strategies. He has had Visiting Professor appointments at several universities, including INSEAD (France), Cranfield (England), and the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia).

Linden, a customer culture expert par excellence, has published 14 books on management, marketing, and strategy. I met him last year on the first virtual EWMS which I attended and was delighted with his presentation.

The Customer Culture Imperative reveals the key disciplines of customer culture that consistently predict enhanced, sustainable business results. Each one is linked to a particular strategy and drives predictable and measurable improvements in one or more business performance factors-from innovation and customer satisfaction to growth in sales and profits to higher rates of new-product success.
