Bad Attitudes: An Uninspiring Podcast About Disability Laura Stinson
-
- Society & Culture
-
A less-than-inspiring exploration of disability from someone who is actually disabled. Heavy on the sarcasm, Bad Attitudes explores the reality of being disabled, how non-disabled people can become better advocates and allies, disability representation in pop culture, and the ways in which disability permeates society. Young or sensitive ears beware. N (always) SFW.

Episode 106: Chair Bound And Down
Despite being outdated and ableist, the term "wheelchair-bound" is still used by a lot of people — including the medical profession. Let's nip that in the bud.

Episode 105: Have Our Backs
Unfortunately, disabled people will often find ourselves in situations where we will not be listened to without the support of a non-disabled ally. It's not fair. Our voices are valid. But this is the unfortunate truth for most marginalized communities.

Episode 104: The Road To Hell
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Or maybe it's "God's intentions"?
That whole "If God intended [fill in the blank] argument" gets under my skin these days. Here's why.

Episode 103: Do I Make You Uncomfortable?
It's not unusual for non-disabled people to feel uncomfortable around someone who's disabled, especially if they're like me and tend to talk about their situation with humor. Their comfort isn't my responsibility, and I'm not going to censor myself to protect their sensitive feelings.

Episode 102: Let's Get Physical...Or Not
It's easy to say, "Just find something physical you enjoyed doing as a child," when advising someone on how to incorporate exercise into their lives. It's not so easy to do when you grew up disabled.

Episode 101: I'm Smart, Dammit
I'm smart. I've always been smart. And being smart is a central pillar of my identity. I much preferred being "the smart kid" to being "the disabled kid."

Terrific Resource
Whenever I’m tired of explaining how my disability and chronic illness impact my life, I share this podcast.
My diagnoses are all hidden, so while we share many experiences, there are also many areas where we diverge.
I really enjoy hearing someone else’s perspective on matters too. This show has broadened my understanding tremendously.
Thank you!
Thank you for your honesty and bad attitude
Thank you for your bad attitude. I’m tired of the huge gap between the ableist understanding and the lived experience of a disabled person. Why should I have to accept ableist pity as all I’m worthy of socially? Why should I have to apologize for the way my body works? Why should I be the one to feel ashamed at work when it’s OTHER PEOPLE that don’t seem to grasp how diverse the human body and experience truly is? Thank you for speaking unapologetic truth about what being human really means.
Should Be Required Listening!
I absolutely love Laura's short form podcast. She is extremely insightful and well spoken, covering all manner of important topics concerning her experiences as a member of the disabled community. I share this podcast with folks all the time and definitely recommend it to everyone.
