Bariatric Surgery Success with Dietitian Dr. Susan Mitchell The reason I listen to Dr. Mitchell’s podcast is because I want to use my new bariatric tool in the best way possible and she helps me with that. Her content is very relevant to the bariatric lifestyle and she backs up her information and content with science based facts. I know when I want the right answer to something that I can look to her for the scientific facts. When I see a health trend on Tik Tok, I know I can ask her about it and she will give me the true facts. Her content is well researched and insightful with relevant facts and anecdotes. She offers a well balanced viewpoint sharing both strengths and weaknesses as well as current trends and issues in the bariatric lifestyle. Baratric Surgery Success became my best companion since I had my surgery on 7/1/24. The information is clear and base on medical research. I enjoy when I am called to stop multitasking, and to pay extra attention to the most important information in each Episode. I am so glad I found you, and I am looking forward to continue my learning during this new baratric journey. With you. Ayleen Ford, California
Focus on the SCIENCE

I’m so glad I finally found Susan Mitchell’s podcast!! It’s so unlike so many others which sound more like a group of friends getting together to compare notes and chat. While everybody who has gone through bariatric surgery may have some very useful advice on how to get through the process, when it comes to nutrition few of us know what science says we should eat. Enter Susan and friends! While a registered dietitian with a wealth of knowledge herself, Susan frequently brings in two of her professional dietitian colleagues who also work with bariatric patients to provide other insights on various issues. Because they all follow the science, the advice of each is very similar and insightful. A recent podcast that Susan did focused on protein bars and how to choose a “real” protein bar from what might be advertised as a “protein”’bar but in reality doesn’t measure up. I discovered the bars I had been eating were mostly everything but protein comparatively. No wonder they didn’t satisfy my appetite!! That particular podcast led me to reconsider a recent decision I had made to contact a non-bariatric “nutrition specialist” with a popular blog online to adjust my macros. Without going into detail, let me just say her recommendations were absurd. I did try them for about ten days and ended up with a gastrointestinal upset for two days. It was then that I realized how easily I can be misled, and decided I needed a professional. But how to find one? I decided to write Susan. She responded quickly and with her help I found an excellent registered dietitian who has put me on the right track. Do yourself a favor. Stick with the science when it comes to nutrition. While protein is important, so are healthy carbs, especially 3 years after surgery. Carbs are not our enemy, unless we ingest them through candy, cookies and chips. My best recommendation is to follow your bariatric clinic’s guidance as you lose your weight. Supplement it with science-based information. As you wean off your regular clinic visits, consider finding a program that is sustainable to keep the weight off. Susan’s podcast is an excellent choice.
