Bedrock, USA
Bedrock, USA is a podcast about political extremism, small town life and the fight for democracy, hosted by Laura Bliss, a reporter at Bloomberg CityLab. In a super-divided, pandemic-era America awash in conspiracies and misinformation, it’s about a group of people who didn’t like what they saw happening in their local governments, and decided to get involved - whether that meant holding a rally, running for office, recalling an official or storming their government with bullhorns and threats. Their stories show how far-right ideologies enter into local politics - sometimes quietly, other times at full volume - and what it takes for regular people to fight back. They show the beauty as well as the risks, struggles and pitfalls of being an active participant in democracy today. And together they create a human-level portrait of a democracy that is fracturing, and the role that extremist ideologies are playing. (And they’re not going away.) Where do their stories point us as a country?

Excellent if a bit slanted reporting
2023/04/24
The series highlights a strain of far right extremism that is popping up around the country. I thought they correctly characterized the Shasta County folks as extreme, but missed the market a bit with Bridget Ziegler. Regarding Shasta County, it appears the political revolt is driven by folks to don't believe in the law and threaten violence unless they get their way. However, whatever one thinks of Bridget Ziegler, she seems to operate very much within the political system and I don't think all her concerns can be completely dismissed. The science on medical transitions for youth isn't quite as settled as the hosts implied. Overall, I appreciated the podcast for highlighting some concerning events that don't necessarily make national headlines.

The Rule of Law is endangered.

This is a great yet disturbing analysis of the right wing attitude that feels “you can’t tell me what to do”. The rejection of societal norms and acceptance of if you don’t like what your elected reps do then you can threaten physical violence is leading to the downfall of a once great country founded on the idea of the rule of law.
