    In the third and final part of this series on translation science, Matthew interviews Dr. Chris Austin, SVP of Research Technologies at GSK, about what the future holds for translational science. As part of this Chris explains how data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence will play a key role in these advancements. Chris and Matthew also discuss the EHR and the roll that it will play in the advancement of translational science.     Understanding Translational Science w. Chris Austin (Pt. 2) - National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences

    In the second episode of this three part series on translational science, Matthew interviews Dr. Chris Austin, CEO of Vesalius Therapeutics about the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and what lessons can be learned from its success.  Chris discusses the origins of NCATS, stemming from the ground-breaking insights brought by the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. Chris explains how NCATS sought to break down the process of biomedical translation into comprehendible steps that could each be assessed for efficacy and efficiency. Finally, Chris gives examples of some of the "rate limiting steps" in translation that NCATS identified and how the organization tackled these issues.     Treating Misdiagnosis - The Future of Patient Safety

    In this episode of the SMART Healthcare Podcast, Matthew interviews Dr. Mark Graber, founder of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM). Diagnosis is no easy feat, and it requires the physician to carefully consider a multitude of factors through a process known as a differential diagnosis; in 90% of the cases, the correct diagnosis is able to be reached via this method. However, in the other 10% of cases, something goes awry, resulting in a false diagnosis. The errors that result in misdiagnosis are quite broad, ranging from human error to systemic problems affecting how fast lab results or other information is made available to the physician. A big part in mitigating these errors has been the rise of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), which has made information more accessible to the physician, while also allowing the patient to begin playing more of a role in diagnosis. In tandem with the EMR, the creation of clinical decision support (CDS) software is helping provide physicians with even more context in regards to what conditions they should be considering when creating a differential diagnosis.

    BeekeeperAI - Future of Healthcare Algorithm Development

    In the first installment of the SMART Healthcare Podcast, Matthew interviews Dr. Bob Rogers, co-author of the upcoming book titled "Demystifying AI for the Enterprise." With the growth of algorithm development in healthcare over the past couple decades, there have been increasing problems surrounding both the security of patient data, as well as the intellectual property being developed. The coalescing of these issues has put a major roadblock in the development and testing of new clinical algorithms. However, a company co-founded by Bob, called BeekeeperAI, is paving the way forward by facilitating a zero trust interaction between algorithm developers and data stewards.
