The first season will explore the Black music of the 80s and the sociopolitical roots of that music. Each episode looks at a single song from the era and what was happening socially at the moment that led to that song. We tell the story of each decade through music. Our host and lead writer Touré, interviews experts, cultural commentators, academics, and political thinkers, who will leave you feeling like you learned more about the music of the period.

VITAL CONTENT IN THE TIME OF BOOK BANNING

When you learn a profound backstory to a “pop song” you may otherwise have taken for granted you recognize the value of the podcast medium. Revealing the genius and wisdom of Stevie Wonder and other artists is why Toure’s podcast shines! When books are being banned there needs to be a multi faceted response like this podcast.

As a teen in the 80’s, I listened to all of the music featured in this pod and experienced directly and indirectly the cultural cataclysms of the era. This podcast is enlightening, respectful, and beautifully produced. I’d give it ten stars if I could!
