Bird's Eye View - Baltimore Orioles Unofficial Fan Podcast

Bird's Eye View is an unofficial Orioles podcast from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Here, we experience the ups and downs of Orioles baseball, and do our fair share of praising and mocking our beloved team. Our position from the cheap seats helps provide that “Bird’s Eye View.” What we bring is perspective. We offer content that will entertain, (very) occasionally inform, and more often than not, validate a little homerism. When it comes to the Orioles, this is your official source for a lack of insight, and baseless opinion.

    Episode 399: We Won’t Stop

Leading Off The O’s clinch a Playoff Birth with a Wild Card series at Home against the Kansas City Royals. Ten years later and things remain the same. Drink of the Week Join us for the Drink of the Week, and let us know how you’re consoling yourself as you watch the O’s. Find us on Untappd * magn8606 * jakee4025 This Week on the Socials Around the Bases First Base: They’re Bad. They’re Good. Rabbit Season. Duck Season. The Orioles finally did it.  After failing to execute on multiple instances, the Orioles are going to the playoffs. There’s that Orioles fan urge to say “we’re back” a few series after saying “it’s over.” Second Base: Bring The Noise? The Orioles have been phenomenal off the field, with their media production and knack for delightfully engaging with the fanbase. They seem to be all in on the #BeTheNoise campaign, and I appreciate the effort. But let’s get real. #BeTheNoise is not what we need in this moment. Ten years after the Royals came into Camden Yards and silenced a thunderous crowd, the Orioles have the opportunity to exorcize some serious demons. After 10 years, we finally have the opportunity to get revenge on a team that ended the season of what was possibly the best Orioles team I ever saw play baseball. So what is needed for this moment? Third Base: The Calvary We have now seen a return of nearly every Orioles player that was hurt through the 2nd half of the season except for Kevin Gausman, I mean Grayson Rodriguez.   Orioles fans have been saying for a while now that they just needed everyone to be back and let’s see what happens in October.  Well they got their wish. Which player is the x-factor on this team that will make or break the Orioles chances in October? Home Plate: O’s vs Royals Wild Card Predictions How exciting or dark will this upcoming week be in Birdland? Fantasy Boss Last (time) was a tie: neither of our selected players hit a dong after dark, and so we remain at 8-6 in Scott’s favor. Because the Orioles season could technically be over by next week, that means we need to get… creative. This week, we’ll select a category, and not one, but TWO wild cards!!! That’s right. Things are about to get wild… wild card.

Episode 398: Shohei Dongs After Dark

Leading Off The O’s head to the west coast, which means the return of one of our favorite segments: Dongs After Dark. Drink of the Week Join us for the Drink of the Week, and let us know how you’re consoling yourself as you watch the O’s. Find us on Untappd * magn8606 * jakee4025 This Week on the Socials "There's not a team better suited to take advantage."It took three seasons, but the Orioles are finally benefitting from Walltimore more than their opponents. The O's really have been victimized by terrible luck lately. 🟠 BABIP 16 points lower than next worst team🟠 Just a .300 BA on 95+ EV (.500+ is expected)Things *should* turn around 🤞https://t.co/j6vSqskB4h— Eutaw Street Report (@EutawStReport) August 26, 2024 Around the Bases First Base: Hall of Very, Very Good Nick Markakis was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame, and the heartstrings were tugged. We spend a moment appreciating Nick, and thinking ahead to who might be in the next crop of Orioles Hall of Famers. Are these the good old days? Is good… good enough? Second Base: Can we trust ANYONE in the bullpen? While we argue over whether Brandon Hyde is pulling the right levers, can we just spend a second talking about how ugly those levers are? The Orioles bullpen is a mess, and there are very few guys back there fans can have faith in – and when they can, those guys tend to get overused. It’s the Magic of Orioles Baseball! Third Base: Will the Taters be overdone? Anthony Santander has been a huge part of the Orioles’ success in 2024. And it’s a contract year. In the first big test of new ownership, we’ll see whether the Orioles will pull the trigger, and whether they bid against themselves. We love Tony. He’s our man. But will he be worth the money he will earn on the open market? Here’s hoping both that a fan favorite stays in Baltimore, and also that the team knows when to walk away. Home Plate: Dongs After Dark It’s that time again: with the Orioles on the west coast (and the ability to join the Mile High Club directly thereafter!), we read a few synopses of our favorite Orioles-themed scrambled films. We apologize for nothing. Fantasy Boss a href="https://www.birdseyeviewbaltimore.

    Episode 397: Bases of Judgement

Leading Off We’re joined by friend of the program, Avi Miller, to decide who is right, who is ridiculous, and what our bases of judgement should be. Are the Orioles one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, or are they a team in complete free-fall?The Orioles are: * 20-20 in their last 40 games * 5-5 in their last 10 games * 10-10 in their last 20 games So look. Are we bad? Is this a bad team? I’ve rooted for bad teams – I know how to do that. Is this a bad team, or is this team simply not good enough? Second Base: OK, but what is going right? We “argue” over which is the best story, including: * Cedric Mullins has had a pretty good month (plus) * Anthony Santander is one of the better players in the league * Jackson Holliday’s return to the majors has been triumphant * Zach Eflin has been everything we had hoped he’d be Third Base: The noise surrounding Brandon Hyde This Brandon is not going to remove himself from the running – but does he deserve to be fired? Jake has strong opinions about not having opinions, and Avi weighs in on a one-sided debate. Home Plate: Stolen bases are a problem This is the age old question: is the hall of very very good, good enough for Orioles switch-hitting catchers? Adley has not been adept at throwing out runners this season.

Episode 396: Lifeline at the Deadline

Leading Off The second half of the season is certainly something. The Orioles survived July, and are off to prove that they can bounce back from their first losing month in two years. Meanwhile, do we recognize half this team? Drink of the Week Join us for the Drink of the Week, and let us know how you’re consoling yourself as you watch the O’s. Between parting with one of their key links to the Dark Ages, to trying to recreate the 2023 Phillies bullpen… they were busy. But was it… enough? Did they do the damn thing? Did they fail to give up too much, all while making themselves better right now, all while getting controllable talent? We will see. But until we see, Birdland will argue about it. Around the Bases First Base: Rough Patches So… how are we feeling? The Orioles were 12-13 in July, and have experienced [clutches pearls] losing streaks! the Yankees are right on their heels, and the Red Sox are uncomfortably close. Time to hit the panic button? Second Base: Since when is Gunnar mortal? Gunnar Henderson has experienced some unusual (and infuriating) defensive struggles at shortstop. Sure, everyone understands he’s tired. He didn’t get the benefit of the All Star break because he was busy representing the Orioles, the American League, and everyone who has ever wanted a sweet, sweet stache. The team is also in a situation in which the viable defensive backups are hurt. So what’s the plan? Pain, probably. Pain and patience. Third Base: A little light stalking

    12th Annual BEVy Awards

Welcome to the BEVys! The BEVy Awards are back! What are the BEVys, you ask? The BEVys are a mid-season awards show in which we (and some of our friends in the Bird-O’s-sphere) hand out faux awards. You see, there is no real hardware, and no one is there to accept. The BEVys are a little bit like Who’s Line Is It, Anyway in the fact that the games are made up and the points don’t matter. The Presenters This year’s show features appearances by other fantastic content creators in the Bird-Os-Sphere: The Awards… The 11th Annual BEVy Awards feature the following awards: * The Forgotten Man Award * The Previous Chapter Award * The Grass Is Greener Award * Best New Orioles Rumor * The Come On, Mother****er Award * Most Likely Landing Spot * The Worst Loss of the Season Award * The Best Hair Award * Best Home Run * The He Is Him Award * The Gen Z Translation Award Many Thanks! The BEVys provides us an excellent opportunity to stop and smell the roses. We enjoy producing this podcast beyond measure, and we have many people to thank for making the effort possible, and for making it so much fun. Please know that there are too many people not listed here that are vital to what we do, and ensuring that we laugh so hard along the way. We apologize for not mentioning everyone by name (but the show is already long enough). That being said, we would like to thank: * The “Voice of the BEVys,” Jovial Jay Shepard. * The many contributors to this show, and collaborators in the Bird-O’s-Sphere, at large. It seems that all the people we meet who create Orioles content online are generous with their time and talents, and know how to have a good time. * OBP Apparel, for our sweet logo. * The artists who provide our show music on a weekly basis: Songs from the Moon – Watching the Orioles (Bird’s Eye View theme song)

    Episode 394: Yankee Shanky

Leading Off The Orioles went well beyond a little Yankee Spanky this week, and brought out the shanks. After taking a tough series from the Phils, the Orioles followed up by taking a series from the Yankees – in the Bronx – to draw within a half game of first place. Not enough drama for you? Well, some of the Yankees had big feelings, too. Drink of the Week Join us for the Drink of the Week, and let us know how you’re consoling yourself as you watch the O’s. And it was a really bad look for them. In a three game series, the Orioles won on the field and off the field. Second Base: Thriving, not surviving The Orioles had a really difficult June ahead of them. With few off days on the schedule, and some really good teams, things could have gotten ugly. And they were ugly: for everyone else. The Orioles’ worst outcome was a split of a four game series with Toronto. The Orioles had to take on the Phillies and the Yankees in back-to-back series. And leaving that stretch at 4-2 is not simply surviving those games. The Orioles are thriving.

Grayson is a solid #2. Bradish is still holding together. And the rest of the rotation is a major league #3 – #5. And there’s a little depth. How far can this rotation take this team? And how fragile is the rotation? Second Base: Gut Check This is where the season gets real. Or… is it? Six games against the Phillies and Yankees could make or break this season. Unless… they don’t? These are big series, to be sure. How will the Orioles respond to the challenge? Third Base: Getting a conspiracy theory to catch on… James McCann is catching an awful lot these days. And he’s doing it a lot with Corbin Burnes. AND he’s doing it when Cade Povich makes his MLB debut. WHY?! What does he know?! Home Plate: Rough Patch Jake whines about the T.
