Hear how Regina, Alan and their three children survived the most terrifying night of their lives in the grip of a tropical storm. “I wasn’t sure whether I was going to actually get to save everybody”. Dashed repeatedly against a reef and then slammed down onto a sandy beach. “We had Anna, who was two, and going into the water in those conditions, even in a life jacket, her chances of survival were small” This is horrifying and compelling in equal measure. “From the time we hit the reef to the time I saw the beach, I knew there was a really good chance I was going to lose my wife and my youngest” Neither Regina nor Alan were novice sailors. Boat Radio – Postcards from Sea – John Herlig sails the world

Today we revisit the first episode in John Herlig’s wonderful series, Postcards From Sea. For those of you not familiar with the story: Three years ago, in a boatyard in Reedville, Virginia, John stumbled across a tatty old sailboat called Ave del Mar. On the surface, she was in pretty poor shape but her bones were good and John saw great potential. Slowly, painstakingly, John brought Ave back to life and now they have embarked on a voyage around the world. This is a story about second chances and about how an unexpected discovery led to a new lease of life for both a 1967 Rawson 30' cutter and her former restaurateur owner. John’s quick wit and infectious humour made him a favourite among Boat Radio listeners when he was featured in The Life Aquatic. Now he’s back with his own series, introducing the people he meets and the places he visits as he and Ave explore the world together. John and Boat Radio are currently working together on a very exciting new project, to be announced later this year. Boating content is hard to find on podcasts so bravo. My only grip is that Bob's No Wake Zone is terrible, just filler, no actual value there. All the other content is good.
