The Nightingale of Iran
It was a golden age for Jews in Iran. In the 1950s, a religious Jew – Younes Dardashti – became a national celebrity, singing at the Shah’s palace and on the radio. In the 1960s, his son Farid became a teen idol on TV. They were beloved by Iranian Muslims. But at the height of their fame, they left the country. It has always been a mystery to our host Danielle Dardashti and her sister Galeet – Why did their family leave Iran? Now, in a documentary podcast series, the sisters reveal painful secrets unspoken for generations. The Nightingale of Iran is a story that will resonate with outsiders everywhere.

I wish millions of Palestinians and other Muslims would listen to this series! Another world, a charming, poetic Jewish cosmos but permeated with pathos and danger. I am Gentile, and though I traveled to Iran in my youth, only just barely sensed this world existed.
Very beautiful!

Thank you for sharing your family stories. This is magical and captivating! I love hearing the Persian accents. When I was a little girl in the 70s in Jerusalem we lived next to a Persian family that we adored. This podcast brings back nice memories.

This story was incredibly absorbing on so many levels. I loved learning about what life was like for Jewish people in Iran during the “Golden Age.” I especially loved listening to the voices of family members and hearing the interviews. I also loved listening to the singing. I downloaded Galeet’s album. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story. Will there be a Season 2?
