Book Talk for BookTok co-hosts Jac and Amy deep dive into the writing of some of BookTok's favorite novels. With their literary backgrounds, they're here to provide some novel insight (see what we did there?) to popular books on BookTok, sprinkled with a rant or two and a generous layer of humor. In season one, Jac and Amy explored Sarah J. Maas’ controversial novel, A Court of Thorns and Roses. In season two, they covered the beloved sequel, A Court of Mist and Fury. In season three, which launched January 31, 2023, they dive into the final book in the series, A Court of Wings and Ruin.

This season, Jac and Amy conduct a literary analysis of Sara J Maas' book Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood! This is Part 1 of Episode 1.
Welcome to Lunathion, aka Crescent City, where Bryce Quinlan and her best friend Danika Fendyr are working women by day, and resident party gals by night. An encounter with a Nightstalker forces Danika to visit Bryce at Giffin Antiquities, where she leaves her weapons and borrows clothes before attending a meeting with the Heads of the City. In the early chapters of House of Earth and Blood where the relationships are plentiful and messy, the scene is set and groundwork laid for the journey of Bryce and those she loves most.

While a night of drugs and dancing brings Bryce to life, little does she know what she is about to return home to find. With Danika and the Pack of Devils dead, only one tenuous thread keeps Bryce safely in the witness column and not the alternative.

After a frustrating business meeting at her old haunt – interrupted by none other than her brother, Bryce’s life is changed once again when a visit from Micah, Hunt, and Isaiah, reveals that Danika’s murderer is not who they once thought. The demon-summoning murderer is back and has found another victim. Their only lead: Bryce Quinlan. While Bryce agrees to help find Danika’s killer, Hunt discovers that his own freedom is at stake. His only path forward: working with Bryce to find the perpetrator.

They make entertainment smart
I love how this podcast introduces deep thinking in what much of us just believes to be simply entertainment. Most of the time I would feel guilty for just reading and listening about fictional worlds but these two goddesses made fictional into academical for me. I also love how even if there are critically analyzing the text (see how I’m even learning writer’s jargon?!) they also make it fun and personable. I’m even thinking about applying for a course in the area!

I have been a listener from the beginning and LOVE this podcast. I’m not a critical reader, I read for entertainment/enjoyment and I learn something new about ACOTAR/SJM books every week. I find myself talking back to Jac and Amy in my car when I listen. They feel like my friends
LOVE LOVE LOVE
As someone new to the fantasy world, fantasy books can be confusing. The in-depth world building, characters, special abilities of each character, etc etc. It’s all just a lot to keep straight. This podcast has helped me see and understand these novels in a way I was unable to. I thoroughly enjoy everything about this podcast. The way these ladies describe and explain every aspect of the literature in such an educated, yet understandable way makes me appreciate these novels so much more. I love how they explain and describe the different view points, symbolism, foreshadowing and similarities because that stuff goes right over my head, but I find it so fascinating. This podcast gives me such an appreciation for the imagination and talent of the author. Thank you, Jac and Amy, for helping me view these novels in such a beautiful way. You are appreciated!
