Adult Ballet Facet #6 | Artistry and Self-Expression

Adult Ballet Facet #6 | Artistry and Self-Expression

What it is artistry? The je ne sais quoi of making something you can’t look away from. The magnetic presence of a performer; the expression, wearing your heart on your sleeve and sharing an incredible moment with the audience. In this episode, I break down why I believe adults learning ballet should begin learning this early on in their ballet journey along with my philosophy on how to work on it at the beginner levels. Happy dancing!

Facet #4 | Becoming an Athlete - Getting Strong Fit and Flexible

Facet #4 | Becoming an Athlete - Getting Strong Fit and Flexible

Cross-training & conditioning are such buzz words and I’m going to break them down a little bit for you how I see them and think about them. As always in my world, what you do depends on you and your goals. You do not have to do anything. Everything is your choice, your prerogative, and based on what you want out of this life and out of ballet! We all start somewhere different. Injuries, pregnancies, bone structures, life choices so this episode will help you learn about the goals and process so you can think critically about what is best for YOU and your goals and life.

Facet #3 | Depth of Technique - The Invisible Key to Ballet

Facet #3 | Depth of Technique - The Invisible Key to Ballet

If you’ve been dancing for a while and wonder why your pirouettes aren’t working yet, or why your petite allegro isn’t getting quicker, or why your legs won’t stay turned out in the center or lift any higher, or why your port de bras still doesn’t look quite how you want, then this is the facet for you.

This facet of ballet is where we work to master movements within the ballet paradigm, which involves turned out legs, pointed ankles, long toes, stretched knees, elongated posture, and arm movements to extend our lines from our back and create gestures.

We build the mechanisms that make ballet look and work correctly. The depth of technique enables us to create the look of effortless elegance while secretly and invisibly working really hard to control the body. It enables us to use gravity & physics to our advantage to turn, leap, lift our legs up high, and more.

And it is what gives ballet the “look” of gracefulness, and the “je ne sais quoi” of floating across the stage.

Love Broche Banter!

I can’t get enough of this show. And, while I enjoy the interviews, the new season in which Julie breaks down concepts (facets) for adult ballet dancers is even more my jam. Fingers crossed for nitty-gritty technique talk after she completes the facets, but whatever Julie chooses to do next with the podcast, I will be eagerly listening (and re-listening).

As a new adult ballet dancer I am LOVING this

Julie GETS why trying to start ballet as an adult can be weird and overwhelming even if it’s something you really want to do. Her podcast and online classes have given me the guidance and information I needed to actually get started and watch myself getting better and stronger! I have real hope that one day I’ll actually get dance on pointe shoes thanks to everything I’m learning from Julie through this podcast and her online classes/resources. Other ballet podcasts are great for listening to interviews with professional ballerinas and learning ballet history, but THIS podcast is just what I need to supplement my adult ballet journey. Thank you, Julie!!
