Kathy Svetina is a Financial Puzzle Solver for Women-Owned Businesses, Fractional CFO, and leader in understanding business financials.
Kathy’s consultancy called New Castle Finance helps women understand their finances, make confident decisions, and thrive in business. As a fractional CFO, Kathy uses her extensive skill set to support small businesses by elevating their knowledge in accounting and operating with leadership.
Kathy immigrated from Slovenia to the US at the age of 19 and surprised herself with her ability to integrate. In her words, “I was born and raised in Slovenia, a tiny country of 2 million people. I didn’t really have any dreams of where I wanted to end up. I had an opportunity after finishing high school to study in the US and I took it. I was 19 years old, and I went to a completely new country. I started learning English when I was 15. I’m still kind of surprised that I was able to do that and go into a new culture and new way of thinking so easily.”
Kathy’s strength in overcoming challenges as an immigrant translated into her determinations within the business world. She described her initial approach in working with clients as developing a human connection and simply getting to know them. She said, “as a fractional CFO, I'm not just there to interpret the numbers and help them through it, I’m a little bit of a psychologist as well too. For women, they sometimes struggle with imposter syndrome. How do I grow and take this business to the next level? Can I actually do that?”
Through her financial psychology sessions, Kathy determines the goal for each business and the brand they plan to represent. Kathy described the stark differences regarding accounting and freedom between the corporate world and small businesses. She told us “the greatest and worst things about being your own boss are freedom.” Kathy helps business owners with difficulties like these discover their real identities and operate at their highest potential.
Kathy says, “You have to fake that things will work out. Once you start walking, the path will appear. The most important thing is that you don’t have to have everything figured out. You start walking, by magic, things start appearing. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. When I look at my own business now, where I was 2 years ago is a completely different path than I am on right now. The willingness to be uncomfortable and learn is a huge thing in life and business.”
