Siri: Resume Podcast (It grows on you)
10/29/2016
Before being awarded an artist residency in Bulgaria, I wasn't even sure where the place was. After a magical 10 days in Sofia and the countryside, I am ALL ABOUT Bulgaria. Especially cheese and tomatoes. But I digress. Even though I don't know when I'll be back, I keep telling Siri "resume podcast" and this is the one I was listening to. Designed for foreigners, expats, tourists and business folk, the topics are varied and don't always focus on Bulgaria (hear a lot about Apple products and bitcoin, for example). But as I've become gradually familar with the cast of characters (Hi Clive!) I will listen to any topic happily. Australians, Americans, British and Bulgarians discuss politics, business models, and *surprise* drinking (because Bulgaria). I may go back next summer, and because I listen to this, Bulgaria is not a fixed thing in one place of my memory, but an ongoing living entity, a friend I'm staying in touch with, until we get together again. Suggestions? The disastrous music tour was a favorite. I'd like to hear more of these riveting anecdotes. Disasters and success that happen because of the astonishing culture clash. When folks come to plug their business they should bring at least one story of failure or success. I liked the education episode a LOT. My daughter has asked about college in Bulgaria. Do foreigners attend universities there? It would be cool to hear from them. What about all those empty houses? Do foreigners buy them and fix them up? Do they live to regret it, or love it? Any creative reuses of old buildings? Please interview some artists. What's happened with public art since the end of communism? Why do Bulgarians hate the same antiques Americans love? what are some successful cross-cultural efforts- artist exchanges, student exchanges, grant programs? Please keep up the great work, Lance. It took me awhile to get on board, but I'm going backwards and forwards until I hear them all.
