If we reframe the question of fixed and growth mindset(s) as a multivarious concepts that spans across a spectrum - ranging from - from snapshots to more fixed, perhaps acculturated perceptions - we might broaden our options for interventions and/or influence - so as to avoid having a “fixed mindset” around mindset. If we hold deep transformation as fundamental to human potential then teasing this out is essential I think. We know that identity is dynamic and multifaceted- we know that culture is dynamic - and our experience and observations of major shifts in our own minds - emotional, social, cultural, or intellectual. Sen’s work in development - links capacity building to freedom or agency - this is key. What if it is a question of building deep reflexive capacities? What if it’s a question of narrative repair? Or perhaps - and this is related to my own experience facilitation of extended dialogues around race - participants cannot see what they cannot YET see - but given the space to pull back layers MAY see. Once they “see” they can consider - and a choice point opens up - an agentive space to be able to choose otherwise. We all arrive at where we are by the way that we came - if we are invited to review that path - we hit a choice point - and transformation becomes possible. I love that these questions are under consideration. I especially loved the recognition of a need for spaces where we can practice flexibility- what if we were able to learn/practice existential flexibility- and the resilience that it might give rise to in the face of stubborn even surprising constraints? Yes, and the idea of “soft skills” is a misnomer. Just some thoughts... Dr. Lori-Ann Stephensen
