Carmen Maria Machado is the author of Her Body and Other Parties, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. Her new acclaimed memoir In the Dream House uses form and memory to excavate and explore an abusive queer relationship. The “Dream House” is both a physical place and the site of an emotional and psychological maelstrom. Machado’s inventive memoir, told non-linearly through over a hundred lenses, mimics the disorienting process of being immersed in an abusive relationship, and although the content is intense and heartbreaking at times, the power of her writing pulls the reader in and forward.
