Ten Myths Parents Believe About Their Child's Education. Written and Read By Michael Lee

About This Episode: Parents are charged by God to make daily decisions for their children as they seek to obey the command to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). In order to make the best decisions, parents must have accurate information. This episode destroys the ten most popular myths that cause parents to make poor educational choices for their children. General Information: As we search the Bible for answers to the question: How shall we raise our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” we can see that the system for educating children was done primary by the parents in the home. However, the world in which we live now is quite different and the vast majority of parents use an educational system that is outside of the home and is that system is called the public schools, or the government schools. As we think about God’s instruction in the Bible, His primary concern was that the parents would fear and obey the Lord, remember to talk about God throughout the daily life of the family, and never expose themselves to the things that the world loves, or idolatry. He knew that fallen men and women were not strong enough to avoid falling in love with the world, so He warned them again and again about the consequences of their disobedience and the chastisement that would follow. There was a time in our country that trusting the teaching of your children to a person outside the family was not necessarily a terrible idea for Christians, but that was at a time when the majority of our countrymen were God fearing people and lived and taught based on Biblical commands and precepts. My view of history tells me that the time of trusting the public schools to teach the children of Christian parents in ways that are acceptable or agreeable, left us at least 70 years ago and the current environment is patently anti-Christian, and may even be described as demonic. To some, this may sound extreme, but as a person who was the administrator of a Christian school for 22 years, my contact with children and parents enrolling from the public schools provided me with a more than adequate insight to the horrors within. Based on my life experiences and the truth of the Bible, I have written several articles to which I ask your deep consideration. The articles were written advocating for parents to consider a traditional Christian school for their children, but the Biblical truths that govern my argument apply equally for parents to consider quality Christian homeschooling. The situation is dire: many Christian parents are doing the opposite of what God commands in the education of their children. God’s plan is to educate and soften the heart of a child towards Him and there are certain things that parents must do to be used by God in this way. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says to parents: And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. And Ephesians 6:4 says it more comprehensively: Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. I hope the recordings herein will be a help to you as you fulfill your precious God given duties as parents. I also encourage you to also think of others in your sphere of influence and share this podcast for their benefit as well. Ten Ways To Harden A Child's Heart Toward God. Written and Read By Michael Lee

About This Episode: You are probably familiar with the term, "hardening the heart" in both the New and Old Testaments. Essentially, it is what happens to the heart of a person when he receives the truth of God and it is rejected, or when a person hears untruths and it is believed. In either case, the heart of a person is hardened against God. How does this work in the hearts and minds of children? Read on and think deeply. General Information: As we search the Bible for answers to the question: How shall we raise our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” we can see that the system for educating children was done primary by the parents in the home. An Encouragement To Do family Devotions. Written and Read By Michael Lee

My wife and I didn’t become Christians until we were 36 years old. As new Christians, we knew very little about the Bible, but soon learned about the great opportunity to do family devotions. What are family devotions? Family devotions is a time that your family sets aside (anything from 10 minutes to 60 minutes) to read from Bible or another Bible based book, sing, and pray. You can do it every day of the week, several days of the week, or just Sundays. The important thing is that your family is habitually gathering to hear God’s word and worship Him in the process. Our family learned about the beauty and benefit of family devotion time soon after becoming new Christians. My son was a sometimes inattentive 11 year old and my daughter was a very chatty 6 year old. I will confess here that there were some evenings that just trying to get everyone together for our 7:00PM start time was tough and often resulted in less than, shall we say, a smooth start. But that was OK. God honored our times that we took week after week and year after year despite the weaknesses of the leaders. After attending several God honoring churches through the years that followed, they now look back and say that our family devotion times were probably the most formative times in their Christian lives. How to do family devotions: https://www.cherishephesians64.com/family-devotions/ Why do family devotions? 1. For all the same reasons as the reasons to obey Ephesians 6:4. Family devotions are part of raising your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 2. Because God is worthy to be worshipped throughout the day in various ways! Family devotions is just one of those ways and is done by the family reading His word, singing, and praying together. 3. Because you need to take advantage of every opportunity to counter what your children see and hear in today's anti-Christian culture. 4. Because it gives you an opportunity to model to your children the incredible importance of a life that gives time to learning more about God's word. Simply put, if it is not important enough for you to spend time with God through Bible reading, you cannot expect your children to place a value on their own time with God. We are not Sunday morning only Christians. 5. Because it brings the family together, encouraging and building the beauty of the God designed family unit. No, I can’t do it because…. I’m not going to address the excuse that you don’t have the time. I believe we all get done each day what we deem to be most important to us and this needs to be one of those top priority things! Will you have to look at your schedule and think about what things are most important to God? Yes, I am sure that you will and some of those things that you love and have no eternal value may have to go. Ouch! Here are a couple of other objections that may come to your mind: “I’m uncomfortable.” Maybe you are uncomfortable or feel inadequate. My answer to you is, “get over it!” It doesn't matter that you haven't done it before or that the family you grew up in did not do family devotions. Start a legacy that your children will one day carry into their families (we are talking about your grandchildren!). If you don’t know much about the Bible or you are a new Christian, begin with a resource that can guide you (see resources). Listen to Joshua 24:15. “But for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” “I have young children that can’t understand.” The younger they are, the more that this modeling of spending time as a family with God will be woven into their view of the Christian life. This is also a training opportunity to train children to sit for a while (like they will in other settings like church) while listening to others. Obviously, you should be considering the level of teaching and singing to their age level, but those lasting impressions will still be made.
