Chess Piece: The Elián González Story
At the turn of the millennium, a five-year-old boy from Cuba found off the Florida coast on Thanksgiving became the most talked about child in America. Elián González had left Cuba with his mom and a dozen other migrants, trying to make it to the U.S. but on the way, the boat capsized. Elián’s mother drowned. Before she did, she tied her child to an inner tube, saving his life. Relatives in Miami — Cuban exiles — took the boy in. His father in Cuba wanted him back. The ensuing international custody battle over Elián González became its own mini Cold War, pitting Cuban exiles in Miami against supporters of Castro’s regime on an island just 90 miles away. The fight over Elián’s future came down to neighbor against neighbor, family against family. Now, 25 years later — we revisit his story through the voices of people who lived it firsthand. Episodes drop every Wednesday, starting 9/25/24.
Chesspiece

The incredible Peniley Ramirez does it again! A moving, deep, and also personal story that goes beyond a sound bite or headline, Chesspiece explores the drama of 5year old Elian Gonzalez with history, context, subtlety, and a balanced and also personal look at all the issues surrounding his rescue and then conversion into the chesspiece of the title. Thank you, mil gracias, Peniley and Futuro!! The podcast is amazing but the ads are far too frequent and annoying. Diet Coke, really? Yuck.
Great piece of history

Great storytelling! The way the reporter intertwines her own experiences with Elian’s story just adds to the narrative, making it even more compelling.
Brillante y conmoviente

Such a generous and vulnerable style of storytelling and reporting. I’ve been moved to tears and also totally fascinated. As a half-Cuban American who was a year older than Peniley when Elián was rescued, I’ve been contemplating how different life was growing up on either side of the ocean. Very well done, as always, Futuro Media!
Very one sided

I enjoyed listening but it is obviously not an objective (or even an attempt to be objective) account of what happened 25 years ago. I feel like the reporter’s own personal experiences clouded (not aided) in the storytelling.
