Episode 4: Open Studios Evanston's Lisa Degliantoni

Episode 4: Open Studios Evanston's Lisa Degliantoni

Lisa Degliantoni created Open Studios Evanston, a citywide celebration of the arts, to take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 6. In this episode of The Christine Wolf Podcast, Degliantoni and commercial photographer Chris Bradley discuss their passion for the Evanston art community and how they both stretched their career boundaries to make an event like this come to life.

Now in its second year, the program now known as Open Studios Evanston features more than 100 artists like Heather Hancock, as well as 25 venues and live art events.

Degliantoni describes Open Studios Evanston as "a self-guided tour through several mediums of art," concluding with an alley art party from 5-9 p.m. at Bookends & Beginnings. A public viewing party and artists' reception is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Evanston's Noyes Cultural Arts Center.

Episode 3: Colleen Griffen: Filmmaking & her mockumentary, "boyband"

Episode 3: Colleen Griffen: Filmmaking & her mockumentary, "boyband"

The five fictitious members of Colleen Griffen's mockumentary titled "boyband" are each distinct identities drawn from amalgamations of pop stars everyone knows. Lance, Chad, Preston, Yancy and Shaun rock less facial hair but just as much naiveté as the members of Spinal Tap, though their Harrison, Illinois curfew probably means THIS boyband never goes to eleven (but maybe 10:55 if all the lights are green).

Writer/producer/director Griffen tells Christine Wolf how she came up with the idea for boyband, how crowdfunding sources like Kickstarter could turn boyband's 22-webisode dream into reality, how One Direction's likely to poach a boyband member, and how the phrase "no big shakes" keeps Griffen and her husband, director Joe Chappelle (The Wire, Chicago Fire), anchored in Evanston, Illinois.

    Episode 2: Yummy

    Episode 2: Yummy

On the auditorium’s stage of Nichols Middle School in suburban Evanston, 16 students (6th-8th grade) share their passion for The Ripple Effect, a show they’ve researched, written and performed about the life of 11-year-old gang member Robert “Yummy” Sandifer. The students discuss how communities come up short with youth, and how their own lives have been touched by youth violence. Introduced to details of this historical event by visiting author G. Neri in Yummy: The Last Days of A Southside Shorty, the students were eager to share their voices as well as the numerous perspectives involved with violence. Visit the City of Evanston’s website for more details and future performance dates. And thanks for listening.

    Episode 1: Restorative Justice

    Episode 1: Restorative Justice

I sat down with lawyer, social worker and fellow Evanstonian, Betsy Lehman Levisay, to discuss personal perspectives and examples of Restorative Justice in action. We touch upon youth violence, the school-to-jail pipeline, alternatives for juvenile offenders, and how the Restorative Justice philosophy brings communities together. Using her education and experience in social work and law, Betsy Lehman Levisay discusses why the "skies parted" when she discovered Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice is more than a tool employed by police; it also serves as a community-building tool when used in nearly every setting, bringing a deeper sense of understanding and empathy to members of any community.
