It’s something we use to organize more of our stuff than ever before, and also something other people use to organize their stuff for our viewing pleasure. Its role as a source of soothing, satisfying, potentially viral clicks is new, but storage container innovations are not – something we had occasion to remember when Tupperware, the company, recently filed for bankruptcy. Tupperware was the original container craze. In today’s episode we’re going to connect it to the contemporary one, because as it happens, for a long time now, we’ve been filling empty plastic boxes with far more than just leftovers. Introducing Planet Money: Can Money Buy Happiness?

People often say that money can't buy you happiness. Sometimes, if you ask them to tell you more about it, they'll mention a famous 2010 study by Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton. That study found that higher household income correlates with greater emotional well-being, but only up to around $75,000 a year. After that, more money didn't seem to matter. This was a famous study by two famous academics. The result stood for over a decade. And it feels good, right? Maybe the rich aren't so much happier than anyone else. But researchers have recently done a complete 180 on this idea. In 2021, psychologist Matt Killingsworth found nearly the opposite: That more money does correlate with more happiness. And that the relationship continues well beyond $75,000 per year. Today on the show: Does more money mean fewer problems? Two researchers with totally different takes come together to hammer out a better understanding of the relationship between money and happiness. Decoder Ring Plus: The Fascinating World of Japanese “Idols”

Decoder Ring’s Evan Chung told the story this week of the Japanese musical duo Pink Lady and their ill-fated American TV variety show in 1980. Pink Lady’s meteoric rise in Japan was exceptional—but it also helped define a broader phenomenon known as Japanese “idol” culture, which is still going strong today. For this special bonus episode, Evan spoke with Patrick W. Galbraith, an anthropologist at Senshū University in Tokyo. He’s the co-editor of "Idols and Celebrity in Japanese Media Culture" and the co-author of a book in the 33 ⅓ series about the contemporary idol group AKB48. Patrick explains that, while idols may seem at first like the manufactured pop acts we’re familiar with in America, they’re actually a distinct category of celebrity with no Western equivalent. Rather than stun with talent and beauty, idols use approachability and vulnerability to compete for the love of fans. Reconsidering One of the “Worst” TV Shows of All Time

In 1980, a variety show debuted on NBC called Pink Lady and Jeff. Its stars were a pair of Japanese pop idols known for catchy, choreographed dance numbers. Pink Lady was inescapable in Japan: selling millions of records, appearing on TV daily, and filling arenas. But their American TV show left audiences completely bewildered. Pink Lady and Jeff acquired legendary status as one of television’s most notorious bombs, a show that managed to kill off the entire variety show genre. Or at least—that’s how it’s been seen in America. But for the two women of Pink Lady, the show was something else. In this episode, Decoder Ring’s Evan Chung puts this so-called “megaflop” in the spotlight to find out what really went wrong. Always stops short of asking the right questions. It prefers to dispense little morsels of anecdote that facilitate light conversation rather than anything approaching pop cultural analysis. Which is fine, just frustrating at times.
