    #236 - A Complete Unknown

For our second Bob Dylan film review, we dive into A Complete Unknown, a very well crafted biopic directed by James Mangold. The film chronicles the formative years of Dylan's career with Timothée Chalamet delivering a phenomenally convincing portrayal of the iconic musician (the best performance of his career!). From the impressive singing to the subtle prosthetics (real or not, they’re worth praising), the film captures Dylan’s essence with great authenticity. Shoutouts also to the supporting cast, including Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro. With Mangold’s steady direction and a focus on the mythology of Dylan’s persona, this movie stands as a very solid addition to the growing pantheon of music biopics. Plus, two huge trailers dropped this week for Fantastic Four and Jurassic World Rebirth, as News Chat makes its triumphant return.Join a crew of wannabe film critics review a different movie every week, and discuss other nonsense. #235 - Brother Bear

Over two decades later, we recruited a special guest to revisit Disney Animation's Brother Bear, a deeply nostalgic childhood favourite that most of us haven’t seen in many years. The film follows Kenai (voiced by Joaquin "Wacky" Phoenix), a young man transformed into a bear as punishment for his ignorant actions, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and brotherhood alongside the adorable/semi-annoying little bear Koda. While the moose duo, Rutt and Tuke (voiced by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas), deliver some quality laughs, we must admit Wacky Phoenix’s performance feels oddly out of place at times. But as one of the last traditionally hand-drawn animated films from Disney, Brother Bear certainly stands as a relic of a bygone era. #234 - Mission Impossible II

Let's do our best to get through Mission Impossible II so we can get to the good stuff in this franchise. In this (arguably) campy sequel, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) teams up with Thandie Newton to stop a deadly bioweapon. But unfortunately their whirlwind romance feels contrived at best and cringey at worst. From an absurd car chase to melodaramtic villainous monologues, the movie delivers some confusing and laughable moments. Set in Australia, we of course can't help but critique the film's exaggerated portrayal of our homeland, especially Billy’s relentless overuse of the word "mate". Perhaps its biggest crime of all however is the criminal underutilisation of such fantastic actors as Brendan Gleeson and Anthony Hopkins. Needless to say, this is one mission you'll be glad Tom Cruise locked John Woo out of the editing room for, lest we suffer the original three and a half hour version! #233 - Conclave

Now that we're officially 25% through the 21st century, its time for Cinema Effect to return to your ears for another year. Our first episode back for 2025 dives into Conclave, a gripping conspiracy thriller that takes viewers inside the secretive process of selecting a new pope. With sharp dialogue and great performances from a stellar cast that includes Ralph Fiennes (the GOAT), Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow among others, the film balances political intrigue with thought provoking analysis of faith and the Catholic Church. We break down those themes, and the dialogue-driven story. An easy recommendation for anyone fascinated by the inner workings of the Vatican, Conclave left us impressed. #232 - Mission Impossible

The countdown to The Final Reckoning has begun. Because we’re going back to where it all began with the first Mission Impossible (1996), the film that laid the groundwork for one of our favourite action franchises. Directed by Brian De Palma, this sleek and streamlined spy thriller follows Tom Cruise (played by Ethan Hunt) as he unravels a web of betrayal within the IMF after a mission goes catastrophically wrong. Unlike the huge scale spectacles of later entries, the big set pieces here lean heavily on tension and espionage, especially the iconic Langley heist. While the mission was, in fact, possible, we dive into how this focused and stylish entry gave the franchise the foundation to become an unstoppable force. Plus, in News Chat we've got an awesome 28 Years Later trailer to discuss, and Golden Globe nominees to react to. All before we hear your favourite movies based on TV shows.
