Climate Takes

Climate Takes is Carbon13's podcast where we ask climate entrepreneurs, innovators and funders for their takes on their industry and climate challenges, while also asking what it takes to solve the climate emergency.  Carbon13 is the Venture Builder for the climate emergency. Based in Cambridge, London and Berlin, we support and invest in entrepreneurs tackling challenges to Earth's Vital Systems. Since 2021, we have worked with over 1000 entrepreneurs, invested in over 70 startups which collectively have a decarbonisation potential of 500 million tonnes per year by 2040. Climate Takes is our chance to invite special guests from this community, and share the learnings, insights and determination needed to scale climate solutions.

Carbon13's very own Founding Partner Michael Langguth and Min Dhillon, Head of Capital, share their takes on the climatetech investment landscape. Carbon13 has invested £10 million into nearly 80 ventures since 2021, with the portfolio now having a collective potential to reduce emissions by 500 million tonnes per year when at scale. But which right now is the most polluting chemical process on earth. To make one tonne of ammonia, two tonnes of emissions are generated.  But industry is so keen for Nium's clean ammonia, that they already have a $120 million project pipeline and $50 million in signed offtake agreements, while still at TRL 5. The ocean is the primary source of protein for 3 billion people, its economy is estimated at over $2 trillion, it absorbs 25% of carbon emissions and could become one of the greatest weapons in the fight against global warming. In this episode hosted by Sara Jones, we speak to Eliot Brooks, CEO and Co-founder of Cocoon Carbon. In just 18 months, the cofounding team has scaled their technology to TRL6, raised $5.4m in pre-seed funding, and grown the company to 12 people. Eliot was already an award winning entrepreneur and Forbes 30 Under 30 when he joined Carbon13's Venture Builder in 2023, in this episode, he shares his journey and his mission to make Cocoon Carbon one of the fastest growing climate hardware companies in the world. Why does concrete matter? Concrete is the second most used man-made material after water. It's also one of the biggest single emitters of carbon dioxide, responsible for 8% of emissions. If it was a country, it would be the 3rd or 4th most polluting country in the world. Sara Jones is Head of Marketing at Carbon13. She's worked in London's startup ecosystem for well over a decade and has been with Carbon13 since 2020, turning it into one of the strongest magnets for climate focused entrepreneurs in Europe.
