South Africa ranks 10th in the world for suicide rates, with men facing an alarming rate of 37.6 per 100,000.     Transforming LGBTQI Healthcare in Malawi with the Umunthu philosophy

    How would you feel if you were turned away from receiving healthcare services because of how you identify? This is the reality for some individuals in Malawi and the center of this episode.  Our host, Hetal Baman speaks with Rodger Phiri, Executive Director of Art & Global Health Centre Africa (ArtGlo). Together, they explore the challenges faced by the LGBTQI community in accessing healthcare due to stigma and discrimination. Rodger shares how he's changing the narrative by implementing the Umunthu philosophy—"I am because we are"—to promote inclusive health services.  With over a decade of experience as a development practitioner, Rodger has led innovative programs and participatory action research initiatives across Malawi and the Southern African region.     Challenging the powerful skin lightening industry

    Did you know that the global skin lightening industry is a staggering $8.6 billion force? In this episode of Re:solve Talks, host Brian Brian Mastroianni sits down with Amira Adawe, the Executive Director of the Beautywell Project, to uncover the deep-seated issues fueling this industry. Amira sheds light on how entrenched biases, colorism, and the lingering effects of colonialism have imposed harmful beauty standards, leading to widespread discrimination against people with darker skin tones. Amira, originally from Somalia and now based in Minnesota, discusses the dangerous and often unregulated chemicals found in many skin lightening products—such as mercury, hydroquinone, and steroids—and the significant health risks they pose.     Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common vaginal condition in women of childbearing age. Shockingly, up to 84% of women with BV have no symptoms, contributing to its stigma and underdiagnosis. Our host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, speaks with Silvia Fernandez Barrio, a radio and TV journalist in Argentina and founder of AEPSO – the first and only psoriasis patient organization in Argentina. Our host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, speaks with Dr. Hassan Galadari, an American board-certified dermatologist and a graduate of the Boston University/Tufts University dermatology program in the USA who serves on numerous committees in international societies, including the American Academy of Dermatology and the International Society of Dermatology, where he is the Treasurer General. He is also a board member of the International League of Dermatological Societies, representing 100,000 dermatologists worldwide. This WSHD, Dr. Galadari sheds light on how and why skin diseases and stigma impact our lives and how global initiatives can bridge the gap for the same.     Nitika Chopra empowers others and shares her story of living with plaque psoriasis

    Have you heard of plaque psoriasis? Our host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, speaks with Nitika Chopra, a U.S.-based chronic illness advocate, talk show host, and social media influencer. As the founder and CEO of Chronicon, which serves as a hub for the more than 133 million Americans who live with a chronic illness, Nitika is committed to empowering others like her to share their stories and combat stigma. As the face of Clear Understanding, an awareness campaign from Bristol Myers Squibb, Nitika wants to dispel misconceptions and share the realities of what it is like to live with this chronic illness.  Shedding a spotlight on psoriasis is needed. A life-long chronic condition, a psoriasis flare can be greatly disruptive to a person’s daily life. This condition touches all walks of life, all over the world. The World Psoriasis Day consortium reveals that 125 million people around the world — about 2 to 3 percent of the global population — live with this condition.  What can we, as a collective global health community, do to better address psoriasis and other chronic conditions?     How Can We Address The Global Burden of Disease Tied to Alcohol?

    In recent years, there has been much discussion over the ways substance use disorders — particularly alcohol use disorders — have manifested themselves around the world. This has been acutely clear since the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the overall global burden of disease and injury is attributed to alcohol at 5.1%.  What are we doing right -- and getting wrong — in addressing hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorders today?
