Local Syrians React To The End Of Al-Assad’s Rule

Bashar al-Assad was Syria’s president for nearly 25 years. He brutally cracked down on a protest movement in 2011, kicking off a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians and led to 12 million people being displaced. Earlier this month, the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled the al-Assad regime, and he fled to Russia. Reset hears reflections from two members of the Syrian American community in Chicago. Bara Sarraj is a biology professor and former Syrian political prisoner. Samira Alhamwi is an adult education manager for the Syrian Community Network who came to the U.S. as a refugee in 2016. Monarch Butterflies Could Be Added To The Endangered Species List. What Does That Mean For Us In Illinois?

Monarch butterflies are the most iconic butterfly, with their bright orange and black markings, but their populations are threatened by climate change and habitat loss. To protect them, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed that monarch butterflies be added to the Endangered Species list. A new study from Northwestern shows human beings around the world experience loneliness at similar times in life. The findings show that on average loneliness moves in a U-shaped pattern: highest in young people and older adults and lowest in middle adulthood. An untaken nickname!!

I enjoy Reset’s content about the Chicagoland area. It gives good context on specific issues in a format similar to NYT’s The Daily gives on worldwide issues. My only complaint is a technical one, which is that the maximum volume of the episodes is lower than most of the other podcasts I listen to, including some from WBEZ. There are times when I am unable to listen to it because the ambient noise level around me is too high, but other podcast with higher max volume are completely understandable. If this level can be adjusted then the podcast would be near perfect in my eyes.

This podcast promotes views of “inequities” in Chicago and that correcting these alleged “systemic” problems requires further favoritism and discrimination based on color and other identity characteristics like sexual orientation. What isn’t understood is the focus on race and favoritism just hurts the individuals struggling in this city and is not sustainable. Please read the Constitution and recent court decisions and stop the race rhetoric. It’s harmful and unproductive.
