CRUMBS Cafe

CRUMBS Cafe was an Upstate New York radio show from January 2007 to September 2015 where local musicians stopped by the CRUMBS Cafe Studio for an interview and a couple of songs. Often we got the chance to record rare, acoustic versions of your favorite local songs. These weekly shows gave musicians the outlet to chat a bit about them, what their songs are all about, or even the local music scene in general. These episodes were also heard on Exit 97.7 WEXT every Friday night and blogged about on the Times Union website. Mike Guzzo, Billy Booker, Andy Gregory, and Rich Krissel.

    Sirsy - Episode 007 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 01 Mar 2007: Sirsy stops by the studio for a bit of a pre-interview for their new CD coming out this summer. I thought it would be interesting to discuss their current experience of recording the new album, have them play a new song, and then interview them again when the album is complete. They were able to give us a tasty sample of what to expect by playing the not yet released song Sorry Me. We will have to check out the released version and see how the song progressed over the months. We also discussed an important topic of fund raising for your band. How else are you going to cover the cost of recording an album? This episode also has a bonus track at the end.

    Blackcat Elliot - Episode 009 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 22 Mar 2007: On this episode of CRUMBS Cafe we had Blackcat Elliot and man where they quite the lively bunch and what a time. I think we got in a couple of questions as these guys went in all sorts direction with the answers. Most of the interview was cut due to time. What we kept was a half an hour of great stories, great laughs, and great songs. They were able to play three songs live from the CRUMBS Cafe studio from their album Never Come Clean. The second song they played is brand new and never before released. We love getting these rare cuts.

    The Velmas - Episode 010 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 29 Mar 2007: The conversation was off to a slow start but once they got into playing a tune they warmed up to the interview mic. It was a tight squeeze in the studio as Mike Bruce brought a scaled version of this kit. With the addition of a video camera we just barley fit in the small space. Ive said if before: these guys have some great radio ready tunes. They were able to play acoustic versions of the songs Out There, This Time, and Would It Matter with each song featuring a different member on vocals. The songs sound quality is impressive for recording in my attic.

    Sean Rowe - Episode 030 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 10 Dec 2007: We are celebrating our 30th episode of CRUMBS Cafe; with the renowned musician Sean Rowe. Lets just go right to the end of the episode. Sean played a new song that will appear on his new album called Old Black Dodge. If you have seen or Sean before you know that his voice and songs are like no other, especially in this area. This new song takes all that you know about him to a new level. This song is what being a songwriter is all about. It can be described as haunting and one that resonates similar to Tom Waits. Chills ran up my spine when we first were privileged to listen to this. This is an acoustic performance at its best. Its, well just listen to the song. If Old Black Dodge is any reflection of what we can expect from the new album we all better catch him now because he is sure to be signed by someone at a regional or even national. Since this was a momentous occasion the episode was also broadcasted live which was a first for us. The night went on without a hitch and we had listeners from Schenectady, Albany, and as far away as Wichita, Kansas. Thank you to all that tuned in including Dan Ross and Platypus for sending in questions and comments for Sean. I expect we will do a live show again during the recording of Season 3. And oh by the way, this episode is the season finale.

    Katie Haverly - Episode 043 [ Encore Episode]

    Recorded 01 Oct 2008: On this weekandapos;s episode of CRUMBS Cafe we have in the studio Katie Haverly. We donandapos;t often get someone in who makes our hearts melt. With her song writing coupled with a great voice is easy to fall into such a spell. The episode was also co-hosted by Billy Bucher of Freakshow Music Productions and Mike Fronk of the Mark Frederick Band. The recording of the show started just as if it were any other radio show with the interview. Katie gave us some pretty interesting and some times deep discussion topics. She played her first song of the night and it set the musical bar for night. Then out of no where, as if the three of us were blind sided my a Mack truck, she proceeded to perform this amazing song with a jazz soul and vibrant, acoustic voice. We were instantly stunned and knew that this was sure to be a hit. Take a listen and let me know what you think about the episode; especially the second songs. Great job Katie.

    The Kite Room - Episode 050 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 05 Nov 2008: CRUMBS Cafe Turns the Big 5-0. The original plan was to have Ben Karis-Nix stop by for an episode with just him. He surprised us that night by bringing along Mike Matta from The Sketchy Indians and Amanda Rogers hence forming The Kite Room. This was the first time the band performed under that name and what a great collaboration it was. They were able to play three acoustic versions of some previously released songs with some new life. The talent in this band is striking, poetic, and captures the moment.Amanda Rogers, fresh from her latest European tour and her most recent internationally anticipated record release, Heartwood, will be playing old and new songs featured on MTV shows such as The Real World and The Hills. Ben Karis-Nix, with songs featured on television shows such as the CWs One Tree Hill, will be playing tracks from his new solo EP, We Are Giants Now (Best Electro-Pop - Metroland, Albany, NY, 2008). This new release immerses the listener in a symphony of subtle synth patches and sampled beats that coexist with Bens guitar and pliant, sometimes plaintive vocals. Mike Matta is a member of The Sketchy Indians who are a songwriting collective that are as poetic and sincere as they are playfully ridiculous.This tour reunites former members of the indie-rock giants Jupiter Sunrise, known for their stellar, energetic live shows and year-round tours in their veg-oil-powered RV. After these powerful songwriters perform, dont leave too soon, because the night is not over until these 3 indie all-stars unite onstage to unleash mayhem as a Voltron-like supergroup. These shows promise to turn every new listener into a full-fledged fan and believer in the power of the indie artist.

    Railbird - Episode 057 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 11 Mar 2009: So this week in the CRUMBS Cafe; studio I guess we officially had Le Petit Railbird with Sara and Chris. It was quite the night as we were able to record three amazing acoustic performances of their songs. They mentioned they dont typically play these songs as such but man they sounded fantastic. Download this episode today and carry it around with you on your iPod. It sounds great. Railbird is an all-original indie folk rock group with eclectic, lyrically driven songs from Saratoga Springs, NY. The band is fronted by singer/songwriter Sarah Pedinotti who is described by Billboard Magazine as a talented young singer/songwriter on the rise. In a recent review of Railbird Pedinottis songs are compared to that of Dylan, The Band and Patti Smith. Pedinotti is a storyteller, who finds inspiration in the fiction and poetry of writers such as George Orwell, Philip K. Dick, Walt Whitman, Allen Ginsberg, and W.B. Yeats. Railbirds debut disc was listed as #8 in Billboards editors picks for 2008, hailed as a great indie band set to break out.

    The Charlie Watts Riots - Episode 089 [Encore Episode]

    Recorded 17 Feb 2010: The Charlie Watts Riots are currently working on improving their web site, adding content, and getting their ducks in order. Quite honestly, they seem to be super excited to be playing together. The positive response they have received thus far from people close to them has been great. WEQX spins there their songs last during their local show and Exit 97.7 has been known to keep them playing throughout the day. The band is currently in the rehearsal/recording studio wiping up a batch of songs that they cant wait to show off to the world. Theyll let CRUMBS and you know when get close to a release date for their local club debut. Until then catch them out at Valentines or maybe sneaking into another venue near you. For this episode we were greatly impress with the songs as the band has been sometimes deemed the loudest band in the area. The songs translated quite well to their acoustic version.
