Indigenous missionaries and Calvary Chapel traditions with Dennis Janisse (DSUM #20)

I have a very special treat for you guys today – an interview with Dr. Dennis Janisse, a good friend of mine and long-time pastor in the Calvary Chapel movement. This is part two of our interview. Dr. Janisse taught both at the Bible college where I went to school in Indiana, and at Lviv Theological Seminary, where I took Homiletics under him. In this interview, we talk about the importance of raising up "Timothies" to take over the church after we are gone, why those young leaders should be from the local population and not transplants from another culture, and about some challenges that the Calvary Chapel movement is facing today.

Dr. Dennis and I referenced the following books in our conversation:
    Calvary Chapel Distinctives - https://www.amazon.com/Calvary-Chapel-Distinctives-Chuck-Smith/dp/0936728809/
    Second - https://www.amazon.com/Second-Humbly-Assisting-Those-Leadership/dp/0936728647/

Parenting Third-Culture Kids on the Mission Field With George and Sharon Markey (DSUM #19)

Parenting Third-Culture Kids on the Mission Field With George and Sharon Markey (DSUM #19)

This one's a little bit hectic, but I think you're going to love it! Today, we have yet another Markey family on the podcast – George, Sharon, and their boys! This interview is all about parenting third-culture children on the missions field, which is something about which both George and Sharon have much experience to share – Sharon obviously is raising their six boys, and George has grown up on the missions field since 1992. We talk about things like family devotions, home- or public-schooling your children in the second culture, language learning, and births in Ukraine.

If you would like to get in touch with them, you can through Sharon's blog here: http://mommyjoys.com

Please do support what they do! George is a huge part of leading Calvary Chapel here in Ukraine, and they are both a wonderful example of a godly couple for all of us here.

If you would like to read the article that Sharon talked about on her blog, you can here:

We also talked about three different books, that you can find here:

I also reference two other interviews that I did with both Jon and David Markey, who are George's brothers and also missionaries. If you would like to watch them, please check them out here:

Indigenous Christian Music with Jonathan Markey (David Snead Ukraine Missions #018)

Today's interview is with Jon Markey, a missionary and friend of mine in Ternopil, Ukraine! Jon is a pastor, songwriter, music producer, expositional Bible teacher, and an encouragement to me. In this interview, we talk about the importance of the indigenous Christian music movement here in Ukraine and why we are not content to simply "translate Hillsong" like most other churches and movements do here.

If you would like to get in touch with Jon and his family, the best way is to do that through the pages of their music movement, Room for More:

It's also available on Spotify, but I can't link that from Ukraine for some reason.

Please do support what they do. They are so important for Calvary Chapel and Protestant churches in general here in Ukraine. Their songs have encouraged many, even thousands of people, here.

The Expositors Collective with Mike Neglia (David Snead Ukraine Missions #017)

“...nothing that I have to say is more important than what God has to say…” - Mike Neglia

I can’t think of a better way to summarize the heart behind expository preaching. May God help us all to hold to that axiom for teaching the Bible!

Today’s interview is with Mike Neglia, one of the co-founders of the Expositors Collective, a ministry that raises us text-focused, Gospel-centered Bible teachers the world over. They have three main ways that they reach out:

You can also reach the Expositors Collective via their Facebook page, which is where I normally interact with them - https://www.facebook.com/expositorscollective/

During our discussion, Mike mentions this book:

    https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Things-God-Second-Everything-ebook/dp/B01N51RXI2/

Mike and I talk about the importance of expository preaching, about how to start a podcast and a movement like the Expositors Collective (we want to do something similar in Ukraine), and just about our experiences as missionaries. Thank God for folks like him that are so passionate about the Word of God and the Gospel.

God's story of grace with Nathan Medlong (David Snead Ukraine Missions #016)

God's story of grace with Nathan Medlong (David Snead Ukraine Missions #016)

This is my great friend, Nate Medlong, a missionary to the second largest city in Ukraine, Kharkiv. He and his wife, Diana, are some of the coolest people in Ukraine. Nate was one of the first missionaries that I came to visit back in 2006 when we came over for three weeks with the Bible college, and I remember distinctly hearing the story of how God brought him over to Ukraine. I don't want to spoil it here, but God's faithfulness and leading is amazing.

If you would like to support Nate and what he does (please do!), please get in touch with Tammy Hole, the missions coordinator at Horizon Christian Fellowship in Indianapolis: thole@horizonindy.org

Nate and I also talked about a Bible school that he wants to start soon. It's something that we both have a heart for, so I'm really excited for his work in this area. Please pray for more "indigenous missionaries" here in Ukraine to be raised up, to make the churches stronger with their ministry, and to plant new churches. Nate needs financial support for this and other things, so please do contact Tammy and set up a gift for them.

Interview with Joel Brown (David Snead Ukraine Missions #015)

Interview with Joel Brown (David Snead Ukraine Missions #015)

In this interview, you will find the following topics: the global tendencies of the church and how it’s tempting to sell ourselves as something we are not because of the new “internet church culture,” competition between online church and the local church (and between local churches or denominations), how Calvary Chapel missionaries overseas actually work a lot closer with other denominations than CC’s do in America and why that happens. We also talked a little about how most Ukrainian missionaries and Calvaries are doing with the whole CCA vs. CGN dispute in America… Honestly, we just want to stay out of it and be equipped for ministry here. We’re thankful for everyone that is a blessing to our ministry from both camps.

We also talk about independent missionaries, creating an internship program on the missions field, and the real damage that can be done with a prideful attitude of a foreign missionary coming into a new culture with an attitude of superiority. Joel has a lot of experience, both as an intern on the missions field, and with managing and discipling interns here in Ukraine. Some things that are important for that are language learning, delaying giving out authority, a prohibition of dating for the first six or twelve months, and learning how much grace to give.

We also touch on dating as a missionary and some flops with internships, including our own failings as early missionaries. Dating in particular is something that is close to my heart, as I married a local here after committing to not dating for the first year on the missions field.

We talk about being sure about your calling in difficult seasons, and about where “home” is for missionaries. There are several missionaries that have recently gone back to the States and taken over churches. Joel and I also both go to different Ukrainian seminaries, which is an interesting experience as a foreign missionary. I highly recommend seminary if you’re a pastor or missionary.

Another interesting thing that we talk about is speaking Russian vs. Ukrainian in Ukraine and about my future hopes and dreams as a missionary. We talk about fluxuations in support during coronavirus, different systems of giving by different churches, training on how to deal with support within Calvary Chapel, how to fundraise as a missionary, and even about a time when Joel rejected support because there were strings attached to the money.

One more topic that we cover is the eschatology of Calvary Chapel as a movement and especially with COVID-19.

Joel is a pastor, a church planter, and an adventurer for Jesus in every sense of the word. I truly respect his love for the people around him and his love for everything that makes us Calvary Chapel.
