Welcome and Session 1, presented by Cool Logistics Global from the 2020 virtual conference, hosted by Port of Rotterdam.

‘Redesigning the Cold Chain: Imagine, Transform, Rebuild’ is the theme for Cool Logistics Global 2020.

Covid-19 has severely tested global supply chain resilience across the board and has shown that logistics and transport really matter. Global cold chain operations, which form an intrinsic part of how perishable goods are processed, shipped and stored across and within borders, have received more public, political and media attention in 2020 than ever before.

The availability of fresh produce, animal protein, seafood and medicines have all shown signs of strain at one point or another during 2020. This may be the case for some time to come as the ongoing global health crisis continues to challenge complex cross-border cold supply chains from production to consumption. Not least of the issues is the rapid swing between in-store, e-commerce home delivery and food service demand, which has sadly resulted in food waste at a time at when our industry is challenged to achieve the exact opposite. Delivering a global covid-19 vaccine will be another major challenge for the cold supply chain, initially focused on airfreight, cold stores and trucks, but anticipated to also engage container ocean freight in subsequent waves.
