The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Had to do this again. What a great offering from Ascension and Father Mike. It now part of my daily life.

This podcast has truly changed my life. I am listening now on “round 2” of the Bible in a Year. Last year was my first time through the entire Bible, a goal of mine for a long time. Perfect for my drive to work every day, 20-30 minute episodes in the morning is perfect for me and time for reflection the rest of the day. Building this daily habit of listening to the Bible has helped strengthen other habits, like exercise for example. Plus, starting the day with such a positive message from Father Mike truly helps set my day off on a positive note. Thank you for this and the community!

We love this podcast and listen near daily. When we do miss a day, we hop back in with 2 the next. Fr. Mike does an excellent job explaining scripture, and it is very peaceful to listen to him reading scripture.

I love what Fr. Schmitz and Jeff Cavins have done with this podcast. It is important to read your Bible as faith comes by hearing. But, don’t stop there. The Bible is complicated, and understanding often eludes the modern reader. Case in point, episode 3 covering the Nephilim. Fr. Schmitz presents the Sethite interpretation of the Nephilim and does not mention other viewpoints. In fact, his stance is not shared by many Old Testament scholars. Rather scholars interpret the Nephilim story as a polemic against Babylonian creation myths concerning the Apkallu-divine beings who mated with humans, producing the culture heroes of ancient Babylon. The biblical story clarified that while this event took place, it was not heroic but evil. The remedy was destruction by flood. “Unseen Realm” by Heiser provides an account of this scholarly interpretation.
