TODAY'S EPISODE:
Good day, everyone, and welcome to the Daily Radio Bible podcast! Today is December 24th, Christmas Eve, and it's also day 358 of our journey through the scriptures. I'm Heather, your host on Sundays. On this special episode, we'll reflect on the profound love of Jesus Christ through readings from John chapters 19 through 21. Though it may seem unusual to focus on Jesus's death and resurrection on Christmas Eve, this juxtaposition highlights the remarkable story of salvation—from the humble birth in a manger to the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. Join us as we warm our hearts around the fire of God's love, immerse ourselves in the Word, and rekindle our spirits with the peace and purpose that Jesus offers. Let’s dive right in!
TODAY'S DEVOTION:
He's the God of many other things. John ends his gospel with these words. Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. Those other things aren't relegated to the past. Those other things continue on even today. He continues to transform men and women, boys and girls.
He's showing up behind locked doors and locked hearts. As Reverend Doctor Munther spoke so eloquently in his message from Bethlehem yesterday, Christ is under the rubble in Gaza, suffering with humanity. He is with the grieving families of those in Gaza and also with those in Israel who are grieving loss. Christ continues to be with us in all our heartache. He is still whispering, peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. Follow me. He's calling all of us to receive God's peace, a peace that was won when he conquered death.
He called Peter and he calls us all to move beyond our failure and into a new life. His purpose for us is to go and feed his sheep, laying down our life for the sheep the way Christ has laid down his life for us. He comes to speak life and peace and gives us a new way to live. Even, and maybe especially, on this Christmas Eve, may we move beyond ourselves and into his path of compassion, love, and purpose.
TODAY'S PRAYERS:
Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.
Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen
And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
