Diversified leadership; empowering women's voices, and making your own way

In this episode of The Brave Collective, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the incredible Latasha Ferguson, a powerhouse in the world of leadership and education. Latasha is a senior leader & educator, leadership coach, and founder of the Mahogany Table Community, where she helps Black women professionals reclaim their time, well-being, and joy. She's got over 20 years of experience, and her insights on leading with grace, harmony, and intention are absolutely transformative. We dive deep into her personal journey of navigating leadership as a woman of color, the challenges of being the "only one in the room," and how she found her voice to create spaces for others. Don’t miss how she turned her passion into a movement with the Mahogany Table and what she calls “the gathering of the only’s.” And, bonus, if you love British TV and soul-hugging food as much as Latasha does, you'll feel an extra connection! Latasha is real, raw, and so full of wisdom - what an honor to host her this week. I was so encouraged after this conversation and I know you will be, too. Defining leadership and why people really leave their jobs

Hey Brave Listeners, In this special episode of The Brave Collective, I’m so excited to welcome my very first guest, Russel Lolacher, host of the Relationships at Work podcast. Russel is a self-proclaimed “leader and communications nerd” with almost 25 years of experience, and we dive into his journey from working in the service industry to becoming a corporate leader who prioritizes employee well-being and trust. We hit it off over on Threads, and I knew I had to get him on the show! During our conversation, we dig into how early career experiences shape our ideas about leadership and what it means to create healthy workplace cultures. We also talk about the seven deadly sins of leadership—things like negligence, apathy, and deceit—and how they can allow bad leadership to thrive. Don’t miss Russel’s thoughtful insights about how self-awareness, situational awareness, and communication are the true pillars of effective leadership. If you're looking for ways to improve your leadership or create a better work environment, you’re going to love this conversation! The New Leader’s Playbook: Building Trust, Not Chaos

Being the new person at work can feel like walking a tightrope — especially when you’re in a position of leadership eager to make an impact but still learning the ropes. In this episode of The Brave Collective, I'm diving into what it really takes to succeed as the “newbie” in charge. Whether you’ve been promoted or are starting fresh at a new company, it’s all about playing the long game, building trust, and engaging your team in meaningful ways. We’ll explore two key approaches new leaders often take (one that works, and one that doesn’t!), and I’ll break down my top three strategies for navigating the honeymoon phase of leadership. You’ll learn how to build rapport, understand your team’s dynamics, and involve them in decision-making — without creating chaos. Plus, a personal story about how my time in a church band taught me a few unforgettable lessons about leadership. If you’ve just stepped into a new role or are preparing for that transition, this episode is packed with insights to help you lead with confidence and connection. Empowering Women in Leadership: 7 Steps to Take Charge of Your Career

In this episode, we are going back to our roots and chatting directly with women of faith who want to step bravely toward their leadership potential so they can thrive in their careers and beyond. Men, there’s lots of a good stuff for you in this episode, too! Episode Summary: In this episode, I’m exploring actionable strategies for women in the workplace to bridge the diversity gap and create pathways for leadership and professional growth. While it's crucial for leaders and male colleagues to support diversity initiatives, women must also actively advocate for themselves. In this episode, I’ll discuss the importance of self-advocacy, setting standards, and taking responsibility for one's professional development. Here’s a brief scoop of what’s in store and a quick run-down of the 7 practices you should be adopting now in your career: * Don’t Wait for Permission: Don't wait for others to recognize your needs or invite you to the table. Identify what you want and take initiative to be included in important discussions and decisions. * Lead the Conversation: Take charge of meetings by preparing a brief hit list of key points and updates. This shows leadership and helps manage conversations effectively, positioning you as a proactive professional. * Plan Ahead: Preparation and planning are essential for being taken seriously in leadership roles. Show up to your responsibilities prepared, researched, and on time. * Learn From Others: Always be a learner, regardless of your position. Observe and emulate the qualities of those you admire, and learn from everyone around you. * Communicate Out Loud: Open and honest communication is crucial. Don't let feelings fester—express your needs and address issues openly to break down barriers. * Create Healthy Margin: Maintain a healthy work-life balance. Prioritize self-care, rest, nutrition, and mental health to be the best version of yourself at work and in life. * Find Solutions: Be solution-oriented. When identifying problems, bring potential solutions to your leaders. This demonstrates leadership and initiative, helping you advance quickly.
