Democrats Gambling Addiction: How Virginians Lost

The long odds that Democrats have been playing with since the Reagan Administration finally came due on November 2, 2021 in Virginia. They bet that no one would notice the sleight of hand as they switched policy for corporate platitudes. They gambled with their House majority, the governors’ mansion, & the Attorney Generals office. They wagered that Virginia was their state. After all, in their mind, they had done everything right: legalized marijuana, lifted abortion restrictions, enacted one of the most expansive eviction moratoriums & SNAP benefit programs in the country, etc. Unfortunately the people of Virginia are going to pay off that bet for the next 4 years. The Democratic Party refused to learn the lesson of 2010 and 2016: that they cannot spit in the face of their base & campaign without policy, then expect to win. Terry McAuliffe has always been a Clinton family acolyte. He has taken on much of their theory of politics which is to say: hire the most expensive consulting and ad firms, blackball any dissent, & blame the base when you inevitably lose. Terry was our worst choice but due to how money buys everything in our society, he was able to buy the primary. Snuffing out Jennifer Carol Foy & Jennifer McClellan, Terry defeated the best chance for the Democratic Party to combat the Republican surge of enthusiasm and embrace the legislation that they have passed over the last four years. People like Princess Blanding represents the black activist base within Richmond that is the engine of Democratic Party machine. When Terry & co. turned their back on her, when they excluded her from the debate stage, they alienated their most fervent advocates. They excluded the voice of those that they depend on. That alienation was not just felt in the frustration & hope of the Blanding campaign, but also within the young people of color within Virginia. We have now found out what that has cost us. P.S.
