EP 19: The Duality of Being a Refugee, Second World, and the Perseverance of the Balkan Soul

Have you heard about the Second World? We're all familiar with the concepts of the Third World and the First World, but the Second World often remains in the shadows, as pointed out by my guest. In this episode, Sejko talks about his rich heritage, culture, and traditions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. You'll be captivated by his descriptions of the Balkan Spirit and his insights into the upbringing of refugees. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and I'm sure you will too.

Ggggggizzelleee ,

This is so important, thank you.

I’m the 1st generation in my family that was born in the US but i feel such a strong longing to connect with my Garifuna-Honduran roots. I’m more light skinned because of my dad’s side of the family (they’re from El Salvador) but my is Afro-Latina. I feel so much more of a connection to Honduras because that the household I grew up in. But I’ve been afraid to go to Honduras and the Garifuna tribes in Trujillo and La Ceiba where my family originated from because I don’t feel like I’d fit in for my light skin. The Garifuna episode really showed me I have nothing to be afraid of and those are my people, no matter skin, shape, or size. I really want to go and I hope that some day I can. They you for that episode!

(I want to clarify that I know that my light skin gives me privilege, and I’m lucky for that. I don’t completely fit amongst white people because my traditions, practices, and beliefs are way different, along with me speaking Spanish because it was my first language. But people (not just white) don’t mistreat me they way they have my mom. My mom has always told me to take advantage of it because life for her is hard since she’s dark and can’t really speak English. I just mean to say that I feel a disconnect from my people because I look different).

Plan ahead, salt your dead ,

Everyone should listen to this podcast

Zeek is sharing incredible stories! These conversations share so much knowledge and insight into other cultures and perspectives. Seeing how uprooting and moving to a new county changes who you are. Understanding how cultures differ and how important ones culture has on their outlook on life. Taking a look into what they thought America was like and then seeing how living here changes those perspectives. Dealing with racism, new ideals, new cultures, other people’s mindsets, all so important to hear and learn about. The individuals in these podcasts are given a platform to share their stories with everyone. Everyone should listen to them and hear their insights and learn about their cultures. Thank you Zeek for teaching us more every day!
