The Department of Metal Antiquities

As a musical genre, heavy metal (and all it's sub-genres) has only existed for 50 years, but in that time there have been a great many happenings that we have collectively forgotten. In this podcast Nik Cameron and Duncan Evans will be going through albums, concerts, etc in a vain glorious attempt to remember it all. We contextualize the subject and then we take it track by track. In the end, we'll tell you if you should spin it or bin it.

    DMA 185: "Power Metal" by Pantera

    In 1986, Terry Glaze was given a two week notice from Pantera. Instead of diffusing the tensions in the band, he just walked away. In time, Phil Anselmo fills his shoes and finishes the album they had been recording. It was called Power Metal. This week Nik and Duncan talk it out.

    DMA 185: "Reload" by Metallica

    In 1997, 18 months after having dropped the double LP, Load, Metallica did the unthinkable, they dropped a second double LP entitled Reload. Though these albums were intended to be a single project, they eventually became two. Join Nik and Duncan as they dig into the songs from this record that don't really get a whole lot of attention.

    In 1999, Ed Hunter is an in production video game that hastily shows Blaze Bayley his exit from Iron Maiden because they got offered too much money to reunite with Bruce Dickinson. Bayley had a career both before and after Iron Maiden. Join Nik and Duncan as they deep dive into his first Post Maiden release, "Silicon Messiah."

    DMA 183: The Doors "Full Circle"

    Jim Morrison died on July 3rd, 1971. What many fans of the band didn't know is that at the time, the rest of the band were Stateside working on what was going to be the follow up to L.A. Woman in the hopes that Jim would return from Paris to complete it. He never did and the rest of the band carried on without him, at first all together, and later separate. Here Nik and Duncan take in the last time the Doors entered into a studio in order to record an album. (An American Prayer features Jim's vocals...so it doesn't count.) Should we spin it or bin it?     DMA 182: "Under Cover" by Ozzy Osbourne

    It was 2005 and everybody was doing it, so Ozzy did it too, but he did it with serious backup. Ozzy enlists the allstar band of Mike Bordin of Faith No More on the drums. Chris Wyse of The Cult and later Ace Frehley on bass. What does he do about a six string gunslinger? He gets Jerry MF Cantrell of Alice In Chains. Now that he has this all star band to kill all all star bands does he set about writing an album the define his career and crush all comers? No. He does a covers record.
