Why do some people believe in ghosts?

Why do some people believe in ghosts?

You might assume that belief in the paranormal is limited to the fringes of society. After all, according to science, ghosts don’t exist; or at least, their existence has never been proven.
But despite this lack of evidence, a significant proportion of people still claim to believe in ghosts. Within the last decade, Yougov polls have suggested that’s true for a third of Brits and 40% of Americans.
How did belief in ghosts evolve over time? What’s the psychological explanation for believing in ghosts?
In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What is the placebo effect and how does it work?

What is the placebo effect and how does it work?

The placebo effect is a phenomenon in which a person's symptoms or well-being improve after receiving a fake treatment that has no specific or intrinsic effect on their condition.
For example, a person may feel less pain after taking a sugar pill that they believe is a painkiller, or they may feel more energetic after receiving an injection of saline solution that they think is a vitamin. The placebo effect is not just about positive thinking or wishful thinking. It involves complex psychological and physiological mechanisms that are not fully understood.
How does the placebo effect work? What are the benefits of the placebo effect? What are the limitations of the placebo effect? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Could chronoworking make you work more efficiently?

Could chronoworking make you work more efficiently?

Most productivity methods aim to boost your efficiency during office hours. But a new technique, based on your biological clock, might be the key: chronoworking.
The term was coined by British journalist Ellen Scott in early 2024 in her newsletter “Working on Purpose.” She predicted that working according to your body clock would be a major trend. Chronoworking means tuning into your natural energy peaks and dips throughout the day, month, or year, and adjusting your work schedule accordingly.
What is chronoworking? How does it work in practice? What exactly is the biological clock? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

How did female body hair become taboo?

How did female body hair become taboo?

According to Healthline.com, the human body has around 5 million hair follicles. Now you might not have guessed, but that figure is around the same for both men and women. And our body hair has a lot of important functions.
It helps regulate body temperature by keeping us warm or retaining sweat to cool us down. It also protects sensitive parts of our bodies from infection, like the eyes and genitals. And yet, women often go to great lengths to have their body hair removed, and there’s a taboo around having hairy armpits or other body parts. It’s in no small part down to gendered social control.
Is body hair removal a recent development? When did that become the case? What about pubic hair? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

How much do surrogate mothers get paid?

How much do surrogate mothers get paid?

The NHS says that one in seven couples may have difficulty conceiving, which can be a traumatic experience for those who want to have children. Sometimes, infertility can be treated through medicine or surgery, and other times assisted conception through artificial insemination or IVF helps those couples get pregnant.
But other times, it just doesn’t work out and a couple aren’t able to have a child on their own. Surrogacy may be an option in such cases. It’s a process where a woman, known as a surrogate mother, agrees to carry a child for the couple who are unable to conceive.
Is that even legal? Why would someone choose to be a surrogate mother? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

    What is the Barnum effect?

    What is the Barnum effect?

Have you ever felt like your horoscope was written just for you? Or a fortune’s cookie advice seemed incredibly relevant? You may be surprised, but it’s actually not such a coincidence after all.
This psychological phenomenon is known as the Barnum effect. It’s a cognitive bias that occurs when people believe that generic personality descriptions and statements apply specifically to them. It may explain how practices such as astrology, fortune telling and personality tests have become relatively accepted despite lacking any basis in fact.
Where does the name come from? An example? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
